Hate to tell you this, but when the braces are removed you will have to wear the retainer all the time except when eating or brushing and flossing. It's only later that you can go to just night wear and then once a week, possibly. Your ortho can't tell for sure just yet how long this will all take so don't get your hopes up as to the exact date the ortho will be removed. You will love your beautiful new smile, and it will be worth it all no matter how long it takes. Good luck with your orthodontic treatment and follow your dentist advice, they do know more about your teeth than you do.

Yes, you will have to wear a retainer for the rest of your life, but it's just a night so don't freak out. Many people have to do this, be happy you don't have to wear it all the time-everyday. If you aren't worried about your back teeth shifting, you can always put in a lingual wire. This is a wire placed on the back of your front 4 or 6 teeth. Usually 6. But you MUST have GREAT oral hygiene for this procedure. I wouldn't recommend this, because you did spend all that money to have braces. Just suck it up, and wear your retainer!

Wearing a retainer at night while you are sleeping is not that big of a deal. Orthodonists will tell this to everybody that has braces so your teeth don't shift back to the position they were BEFORE braces. A lot of people who get their braces removed don't wear their retainers at night. Some of them, like my boyfriend, will have no problem and continue to have the straight teeth after the bracers are off. However, some people's teeth DO shift back to their old position and they have to get braces AGAIN.

So, go ahead and don't wear it at night if you feel like taking that chance! There is no way to prevent it. If your teeth are going to shift back to the way they were, then they are just going to.

HELLO,
WEARING YOUR RETAINERS IS VERY IMPORTANT AFTER THE BRACES COME OFF TO MAKE SURE YOUR BITE DOESN'T RELAPSE AND GO BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS BEFORE BRACES. DID YOU EVER DISCUSS PERMANENTLY BONDED RETAINERS WITH YOUR ORTHOODNTIST?

Sorry, but no retainers and you teeth will shift back to its original position which isn't good. It's not that bad, only at night, at least it isn't in the daytime.
