Probably won't work since part of the deal with unemployment says you have to be actively looking for emplyment IN NY if you are going to receive unemployment payments in NY. You normally need to call an 800 number and talk to a person at unemployment to start the claim. Look it up on the internet for the county your friend lived in. It is normally done through each county. They will be able to say yes or no to paying even though your friend is in FL. YOu may also be able to file for FL. When I retired from the Navy I moved home to CA with my husband who was still active duty at the time. I hadn't earned a cent in CA for a long time but was able to claim my unemployment in CA since that was where I was living and not working at the time. It normally is based on the money that you had earned per quarter and then where you are now living. Have your friend check into the payments from FL but know NY will pay way more money than FL. Good Luck.

You may apply for UI benefits by calling the TCC at 1-888-209-8124.

This is for residents of New York State but work in another state. Your friend may have to prove that they reside in NY State.
