I don't think it would look like a funeral at all. I would think it would be very classy.

It's actually not too hard. If you were only using black, then it might be a bit somber, but in truth, when you add in the white, it becomes a very classy and classic event.

I highly recommend getting Martha Stewart's recent Weddings magazine...It may be the winter or summer issue. The cover has a fabulous white dress with black embroidery, and many of the articles address using black & white to create a beautiful setting.

FYI, if anyone is giving you grief over this, you can let them know that fashion mavens Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham both had black & white weddings (separately, of course, because SJP is married to Matthew Broderick, and Posh is married to David Beckham!).

Here's what I just described to another asker, regarding my daughter's upcoming wedding:

Her dress is white with a black sash. The bridesmaids will wear white satin dresses with a black organza overlay. The men will wear black on black tuxes...the groom will have a white long tie, and the groomsmen will have white bow ties.

The bride will carry red roses, and the groom will have a red rose boutonnière. The bridesmaids will carry white princess roses, and the groomsmen will have white rose boutonnières.

The tables will be covered with white table cloths, and black napkins. The chairs will have white covers with black sashes. For table decorations, we will have a black napkin unfolded in the middle of the table round, with white flower petals scattered across the table.

P.S.
It's funny how things change...Just a few months ago, I asked a similar question, and got a totally different set of answers! Apparently, black & white is the new "in" thing, which I guess I'm glad about!

my wedding is black and white as well, and it is in the summer. my girls are wearing black dresses, but to minimalize the "funeral" look there dresses are cocktail/tea lenght ( it shows off some skin that way). also they are going to have white flowers....these will pop in the pictures. my dress is white and i'm having purple flowers. the guys are wearing black suits with black ties and balck vests, but with purple flowers on their lapels. the flowers will really break up the color. it will look great for pics. also in my deco ...it is mostly white backdrop...centerpieces have white candles in floating awaure vsae with a few dark pruple sontes in bottome ( which can look blakc from far away) and white rose petals floating in the water. make sure all of your linens are white. in order to avoid the funeral look only have the wedding party in black. ...make the black everywhere else minimal. you can have it in the invitations, just make sure that the white and black are equal. try to avoid black in the ckae, instead incorporate a color flower. black and white is elegant looking and classic. you cant go wrong. it is your day don't worry about what other ppl will think. just don't over do the balck. focus oh white for accents. good luck

It's a really tricky thing as I've seen lots of "Funeral" Weddings. The thing is...not to forget color. If your dresses are black & white, make the flowers a bright red or get a mixed bunch of vibrant different colored flowers. The thing to remember is to bring color in to the wedding in different areas (the groom's button, the mix of flowers the flower girl drops, the table center pieces, the flowers @ the church). There are loads of way to add color to a black and white wedding and flowers is a great way.

Good Luck.

I dont think it will look like a funeral if you have more white than black. But you just a traditional black and white wedding is nice.

I think black and white weddings look so nice. You can use the flowers as an accent color so it makes the pictures brighter (like if you had red or pink flowers). The Bridesmaids don't have to be in all black, you could do a mix and match...have the top be white with the bottom black or vice versa.

Make sure to have some color accent. The first b&w wedding I shot (as photographer) was about 10 or 12 years ago. I had never seen that color scheme before. And the bride carried a black bouquet. It was UGLY! It wasn't a gothic or Halloween wedding, either.

Just use colored flowers and include some accent color in the decor and it looks fine. I don't like every single thing to be b&w. YMMV.

A black and white wedding can be absolutely stunning. My cousin had one. I thought she was crazy but it turned out to be very different and downright gorgeous.

1. Keep flowers elegant, not too fussy.
2. Bridesmaids dresses should contain both white and black, not solid black.
3. No black lace, lace comes back to funeral stuff.
4. Contemporary designs on wedding dress, cake, decorations, etc.
5. Pew markers should be white bows with black center spot, not black bows.

I just went to one in May and it was lovely - it looked nothing like a funeral. Bride's dress was white. Groom and groomsmen wore black tuxes with white shirts. Bridesmaids wore black dresses. Invitations were white with black print. All of the flowers, including those carried and worn were pink, orange, purple, and yellow. Bright! The pews and other areas were decorated with greenery and white tulle. Very sophisticated. Black and white print dresses are very popular right now and could even be used as bridesmaid dresses. Best wishes!

You bet! I'm getting married in October, and my wedding colors are black, silver, and white! I've already got the favors, the decorations, the dresses and everything all done, so if you'd like suggestions or pics of what I'm doing - feel free to email! You know the old saying "black is timeless, black is chic, and you can't go wrong with basic black..." or something like that!! Congrats!

black and white weddings don't look like funerals. They are very romantic and elegant. Make sure you have bold accent colors to give it that little bit of pop. They are actually a lot easier to decorate for... because everything matches!
