My pain medication includes caffeine too. It is a synergistic agent that does increase the effectiveness.

Caffeine is included with lots of prescription pain medications. They have found that it increases the effectiveness of pain meds, as well as counteracting that sedated feeling.

Caffeine helps with headaches, it has something to do with restricting blood vessels. That is why it's an active ingredient in Excedrin. I don't think it helps with any other kind of pain.
