First off this was just a question out of curiosity, not really a feeling of persecution. Second, a couple of answers have included references to chats and intolerance from Christians on Answers. So, if someone comes online and claims they are a Christian and starts bashing people, then we take that at face value? Hmmm.....

Jesus said this:

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.
John 15:18-21
He continues.......

"All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you."
John 16:1-4

Men hate God, whether they will admit it or not. Therefore they also hate what God loves.

You must be new here.

First of all, if you take a closer look at the posts (and not just the first ones you happen to see in a given span of 10 minutes) you'll see that the Christians can be incredibly intolerant and proselytizing here. So much for the "they're mean because they don't have God" claims.

Second of all, hostility is unfortunately a natural part of any unmoderated (which this is for the most part) internet forum. Go look at a music newsgroup on usenet if you don't believe me.

Yeah, I noticed it too. I don't come here that often and it's seems like a lot of people are mocking the Christian religion. I don't get it. I guess Christian's have become an easy target and it's acceptable to do so as wrong as that is.

If atheists were truly "atheists" they wouldn't be here in debate with religious people. They would be more certain of themselves. But they're like arrogant people in a dark room needing someone to turn on the light for them. They are afraid of what others might see. And this is their way of asking.

Because alot of Christians try way too hard to get other people to see things their way. They cannot accept the fact that not everyone believe what they believe or the way they believe it. The way some of these people act makes me ashamed to say I am a Christian sometimes... It's actually quite sad.

Maybe a lot of Christians should look at it this way.

In the Bible when people did not accept who Jesus was, did Jesus call them idiots or other names.

Did Jesus still help people that did not believe in him. Of course he did.

Unfortunately there are many people who act exactally the opposite of the person they are following, and still call themselves Christians.

How many Chritians actually do practive the What Would Jesus Do? saying.

Not many.

There is just as much animosity and interolerance from Christians towards non-Christians.

So, when you cry foul, make sure you see all sides.

No you didn't; this is your way of starting to preach. If you want to gain converts try not to be so underhanded, you needn't go on the defensive to start a discussion.

1. Satan causes the unbelievers to hate us.
2. Christians brought it on ourselves by caring more about our own comfort than the welfare of others.
3. Some well-known and vocal Christians are obnoxious and unloving and the rest of us just catch the fall-out.
4. We can be pretty intense and serious about our beliefs in an age that's ironic and "well, whatever' about everything, which makes us hard to understand.

Take your pick.

Because of the bad behavior of Christians here.

Some of it is of course unwarranted intolerance by others, but most of the behavior of most of the Christians here merits a lot more animosity than they're getting. If atheists behaved this badly, you'd be coming after us with torches.

Already in the first 15 or so responses you've got 6 or 7 Christians who took this as an opportunity to lie about atheists. Doesn't the fact that you people have to lie so much to defend your beliefs tell you something about the quality of those beliefs? It should.

Oh, man, Deke, thanks for posting that. It does say it all, doesn't it?
