if you can call them in advance, even by an hour or two then they will usually just rebook your flight for later in the day. i did this once. i got confused on the times and i called about 45 minutes before take off and they just changed my flight to the next available one. southwest doesn't charge the $100 rebooking fee that most airlines do but you may have to pay for the difference if the flight you're being rebooked to is a more expensive one. it's usually only a matter of $50 or less.

They never give you a full refund but they may offer you a credit for your ticket or another flight later in the day. Last time I cancelled a flight with them they just issued me a credit.
