Short answer:
Japanese is spoken in Japan. It's written with a variety of different characters (which, for the sake of simplicity, you can think of as different alphabets). Some of them are Chinese characters, but just because they look the same doesn't mean they're pronounced the same or even that they mean the same thing.

Chinese is a group of languages spoken in China, not just one language. They're all written with Chinese characters, which are called hanzi. Usually when people talk about speaking Chinese, they mean Mandarin. Mandarin Chinese is the official type of Chinese that's spoken all over China (though not every person understands it). If you go to Beijing, the people will speak Mandarin. It's also spoken in Taiwan.

Cantonese is the second most popular form of Chinese langauge, next to Mandarin. If you to go Hong Kong, the people speak Cantonese.

After a semester Mandarin Chinese classes, I could listen to a language and tell if it was Mandarin or not. It's not too hard to tell if you know what to listen for.

You can tell Japanese apart from the Chinese languages because of the length of words. Names are a good place to start. Chinese people have full names that are 2-3 syllables long (and sometimes, rarely, 4). Japanese people tend to have multi-syllable first and last names (though not always). Also, look for "san" at the end of words. There are other ways to tell, but they're hard to explain to someone who's never studied any of them.

First of all it's Cantonese and Japanese.

Cantonese is a dialect of Chinese language commonly spoken in Hong Kong and surrounding regions. The official language of China is Mandarin which means there is a lot of difference in terms of sentence structures, words etc. but many things are common so they may be as different to each other as e.g. Hindi and Gujarati in India.

Japanese is an altogether different language whereas Cantonese follows the traditional Chinese character and Mandarin, simple Chinese alphabet (called Kanzi character), Japanese follows it's own character set. Also, very few words are common between Japanese and Chinese languages. You may say the differences are as obvious as e.g. Punjabi and Tamil.

Japanese is the language used in Japan, although they still have some Chinese characters. However, the meanings would be different from Chinese then...

Cantonese... I am a Cantonese..
It is a language used by us, the regions near Hong Kong (香港), Macao (澳門) and Canton (Guang Dong, 廣東)...
It is a language that very different from Chinese, although we all use all the Chinese words, because we speak in Cantonese but when we are about writing a essay or a passage, we write in a Mandarin form, which the nuance is we speak and write in Cantonese is different.

Cantonese is a close-by people in part of China. it is likewise between the languages spoken in China, the different general one being Mandarin. Cantonese people stay on the coast and in Hong Kong. chinese language people are people who're extra centrally located in China, such using fact the capital city of Beijing. And jap people, of direction, are from Japan, which (i'm hoping you already understand this) is an entire diverse Asian united states of america. jap people and chinese language people could initially seem a sprint comparable to those that do no longer understand their backgrounds, yet their cultures are extremely particularly diverse. Their nutrition, classic variety of gown, folklore, and so on. is all diverse. comparing chinese language people to jap people is like comparing individuals to the French- particular, we could initially seem extremely comparable, yet we've completely diverse languages, lifestyle, and nutrition.

Cantonese is a variety of Chinese spoken in
the southern part of China. Chinese is not
one language. In reality it is more correct to
speak of many Chinese languages rather
than a Chinese language.
Japanese is another language entirely.
Though it is partly written in Chinese characters,
it has an entirely different structure.
Linguists usually classify it as an "isolate",
but it does have some resemblance to Korean.
