I need to register a gun that my dad is giving me. I have never registered a gun before. I was told I can go online and get a registration form and mail it in. What do I do?

How about you contact your local County Sheriff's Department and check on the laws and policies regarding the tranfer of ownership for a firearm.

Every state and county in the USA may have a different policies or laws concerning firearms sales and distribution, so asking for a specific website in Yahoo is not going to get you any results.

If it is a rifle or shotgun, then you probably won't have to do much, if anything. A handgun will be a completely different process, depending, once again, where you live and the local laws about the transfers and ownwership of such weapons.

Have you tried your local community government (State, County, City) websites? I would start with my local police station, and work my way up through the county and state offices, until I got my answer.

Where I live right now, the County Sheriffs (according to state law) issue and revoke permits to PURCHASE and or CARRY concealed handguns.

Rifles and shotguns do not require a permit. As far as transferring ownership, the buyer or recipient must obtain a permit to purchase the handgun, give it to you when you sell/give it to him, and then you take it to the Sheriff's Office to be filed. That way if the serial number comes up somewhere they can see it was legally transferred to someone else and you can't be held liable.

If responsible gun owners would stop buying "military surplus" ammunition and assault rifles, there would be no need for more laws. There is NO reason in the world to own and assault weapon - none. You can't hunt with them nor use them for target practice. They are only used to kill. The NRA needs to become more responsible....and act responsible. Before you jump down my throat, I have been a member of the NRA for 40 years. I don't currently own a gun but have in the past. I am totally for the right to bear arms. If I ever feel the need for a weapon, I want the right to buy one. However, I am totally against owning assault weapons or anything that is used simply to kill people.

Also check whether registration is required. often, registration of newly purchased is required. Guns obtained in otherways, (gifts, move from another state) may not be required to be registered or registered on a volunteer basis.

You can't get a form and mail it in. A FFL holder will need you to appear with your drivers license and gun permit if one is required in your state. He will then give you the paperwork that you need and record the transfer. It should cost around $30 for him to do it. If you need to find a local FFL holder look on gunbroker.com. They have a database of FFLs that you can search by area code. Good luck

Huh? Where are you located? If in the USA, chances are that you DON'T have to register your gun (and most likely can't if you wanted to).

Go to the website for your state and search around. Each one is different. You might ask on here where to find it and mention the state.
