That might have been true, but it is changing quickly. It's a meaningless statistic unless you know the facts behind it.

Remember the two most popular travel destinations for US citizens are Mexico and Canada, neither required passports to travel there until this year. When you add that to the fact that the US is a vast and varied country, one where you can travel for years without seeing the same things. There was no need for vast segments of society to need a passport. This is the opposite of much of the world.

That being said, I think way too many US citizens don't travel overseas enough. As Mark Twain wrote:

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime."

Seems like about 21.7 % of Americans own a passport, according to statistical research. But that is changing, since it's being required to travel to places it wasn't required not long ago, like the Bahamas. It's known that there's a serious shortage these days, and getting a passport is taking twice as long as before.

I have mine and have to renew it soon. I do believe that about 50% of Americans don't currently have a passport because we rarely have the need to leave our wonderful country!

im surprised its not more. when you are near a border, its pretty common for people to have passports, but in the middle of the country, the only people who have them are people who leave the country on vacation, and theres not a ton of people who do.

I am sure it is true. Many people here don't travel much and it isn't a necessity to see America.
