Yesterday, I had to run in the market to get some hot dog and hamburger rolls for my little cousins party. I was in a hurry so I stopped by one of the cashiers and asked them where they were located. And she said to me "I dont know. Why dont you just look at the signs like me and everyone else?" I turned around and walked right out the door. Should I have reported her?

is good customer service dead? the answer generally speaking is yes, however everyone involved in the transaction is pretty much at fault. In your case you absolutely did the right thing. You left. Generally speaking customers claim to want good service, but continue to patronize the same places that give them crappy service and why? because they have the best prices and are convenient (I'm looking at you walmart and home depot)

So when people whine about poor service I say "you deserve it" If you go back there then you're saying I don't care how you treat me, your prices are too good to pass up. Complaining is also generally pointless, unless we're talking a small store. The reason is that so many people complain about the smallest thing and are so prone to mdemanding credit or compensation that legit complaints (such as yours) get lost in the din. Typically stores have high turnover rates in the frontline employees because they pay low wages, treat them like crap, and rarely invest in proper training. As a result, they often don't give a crap and that comes across to the consumer. I'm not excusing that, just explaining it.

This is why I say that everyone from the company, to the employee to the customer is responsible.

As I said, you demonstrated the exception to this rule. However. Your Q was should you report them? my answer is yes, but with two caveats. One: tell them you won't come back there again. Or tell them if it ever happens again you won't come back. Two: don't be whiney or over the top. Being matter of fact, soft spoken, direct, factual & calm gives you credibility and you will be taken seriously. If you are screaming and blathering, it's a waste of time because those people generally aren't taken seriously. Trust me, I know.

NOT 100% dead. I have had jobs where I am responsible for direct customer to customer service. I've noticed that my other employees are sometimes rude to customers and I think it is unacceptable. I've tried my best to make sure every customer feels special and you know what? Customers really love me! And some of my fellow employees take their jealousy out on me. Aside from the personal story, I agree with you that workers care less about customers a lot of times and that hurts my feelings because I do care about people. They just want to get their paychecks and go home.

In your situation, I think it was absolutely wrong for an employee to make those comments to you. I would have complained to a manager about that. Infact, in situations like that, I have. By reporting it to a manager, this person will know that they cannot make comments like that to people who basically gurantee his/her paycheck. In some situations, customers come across as rude and demanding and employees feel threatened. Im sure this is not the case for you, but I do hope that you are mutually respectful and positive in negative situations. Im sorry that you had to experience that. Besides reporting it, try asking another employee and stay positive and tell them why you can't just waste minutes looking at signs at the moment.

Best wishes to you and stay positive !!! Don't let negative people ruin your day! !!!

Ha. That was SO rude of her.

I have noticed some cities have horrible customer service and others have great customer service. I never thought I'd be one to say this, but I get the WORST service ever where African American girls work. They have serious attitudes and act all put out every time a customer needs something.

I would have reported her... what kind of cashier doesn't know where the bread is??? Bread is a basic staple.... I can see if it were something strange, but bread??? I am sorry to hear that! I guess that is why they put those signs up now, so the cashiers can be lazy and sit and gossip with their co-workers. It's unbelivable how horrible customer service has gotten.

You better believe it- in a New York minute!!! There was no excuse for that answer, but I have a really hard time these days finding good customer service. Just as I complain to management about poor service, though- I also compliment good customer service!

Nah, it's how it is nowadays. I grew up in the 70's and people tripped all over you to give good service. Now that jobs like that are a dime a dozen, no one really cares. You may think it is bad here but you should see Germany... they will be talking to another co worker and you are considered very rude if you dare interrupt them and the fact that you are standing there needing help does not bother them in the least.

Very unhelpful, to say the least! Something similar happened to me lately, and I didn't plan to report the stupid/rude clerk, but on my way out of the store (Marshall's) the manager (or at least a guy in a suit) asked me if I found everything I was looking for. I said yes, thank you, but with no thanks to the young woman in the luggage dept, who was no help whatsoever.......... and his response? "OH"., so yes, customer service may be indeed, dead.

Yes, you should have reported her.

If she was having a bad day, then she should have gone home early.

If someone doesn't want to work with people, then they shouldn't take a job as a cashier.

Well, since you were in a hurry, you should call back and tell them manager. If you are in almost any business, customer service is a must.
