A standard passport costs $97 plus the cost of official passport photos and count your birth certificate if you don't already have a certified copy. Then to expedite it, it costs an extra $60. They are predicting 10-15 weeks for standard and 6-8 weeks expedited. However, check the new regulations regarding passports. If you are going to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean and can prove with an official Receipt that you have applied and have a Driver's license then you can go through September. Check the State Department website.

There is no need to pay the extra cost, which is about $60, because the passport office is so backed up that it will likely still be late getting to you. The passport offices issued new rules just last week because of the delays. the best thing to do if you can is to go to one of the passport offices (or satellite offices) and spend a whole day walking it through.
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced Friday, June 8th that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air. This accommodation does not mean that Americans are exempt from meeting the entry requirements of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region. Entry requirements for those countries remain in effect. Americans traveling to those countries must verify the specific entry requirements for that country before departure. To access entry requirements for all countries, see our Consular Information Sheets.
Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application status. Children traveling alone should carry a copy of their birth certificate, baptismal record or a hospital record of birth in the United States in addition to their passport application status documentation. This accommodation applies to all American citizens who apply for passports, until September 30, when this accommodation period ends. U.S. citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at:

I googled it for you, this is one company that does it... expensively. http://www.speedypassports.com/fees.htm Passports take just over 2 months when done properly, my postmaster forgot to sign the form saying he knew me so I was held up an extra 2 weeks.
Most post offices do passports and the pictures now. You can ask at your local post office where you can get a 'same day' passport... I was told if I went to Boston (I'm in Massachusetts) I could wait in line and get one the same day, but since I didn't have an entire day to travel and wait in line I didn't get details. I dont' think there was any extra charge for this, but check locally. Good luck!

The US passport office is slow, even if you pay the expediting fee it can still take forever! I use an independent company that's much faster (and also slightly more expensive) - www.travisa.com
They can literally hand-walk your passport through in one day...and have offices in all the passport office cities.

It costs $60 originally. It takes from 4-6 wks to come by mail. I think its another $40 to speed it up to about 2-3 wks.
