Funny, dear friend, I truly believe that we have souls simply because of an experience that I had when I was 19.
My stepfather's mother was dying of cancer, but before she died I saw her apparition in my bedroom-my niece witnessed this also, and my collie dog was a nervous wreck. Hazel was alive at the time, but declared brain-dead and on life-support.
Just moments before seeing her, there was a small light in my room. An orb, if you will, about the size of a tennis ball and without any sort of radiance such as a beam. However, it *did* glow.
I think our souls leave us at the time when all possibility of conscious awareness has passed. It would be cool if they could be customized.

Souls do not exist.
What you call a soul is merely a function of your brain. Calling it a substance is a category error.
Your brain, by the way, is gooey and pinkish gray. It has the texture of a slab of uncooked beef. I know this from neuroanatomy lab, in which I got to play with and cut up human brains.
