A good indicator of how many words the English language has is the number of words listed in the Oxford English Dictionary. It currently officially has some 290,000 entries, with more than 600,000 compounds.
English language, however, naturally also has lots of slang words that are not listed in the dictionary but widely used, so it is difficult to estimate how many English words exist in reality. Some estimate the number of words to be as high as 1,000,000.

That is IMPOSSIBLE to answwer. Why? Look @ all the words that we borrowed from other languages / tongues.
( In some languages, the word for language, translates into English as TONGUE. ) As we continue t oDISCOVER new objects in space or new elements, etc, we need new words for them. Plus do NOT forget which form of English are we talking about here: Americanized English or Oxfordian English. Say for instance you are in America, you would say Radio, or Flashlight. Right? Sure! On the other hand when in England one would say Wireless or Torch. Plus lets NOT forget one can call America as America or U.S..A. just like Canada can be called Canada or The Dominion Of Canada.
Since Fathers' Day is right around the corner. Try this one:
Dad, Father, Pop Step Dad Step Father. System of Measurments: English, Metric, Calvin...
Dog Names:
Collie
Border Collie
Minature Collie
Retriever
Golden Retriver
Etc.
The name Cleveland can be spelled as either
Cleveland ( The modern day spelling of the city. ) or Cleaveland ( The old way and also Moses Cleaveland's last name whom the city is named after. )
Sam thing with Olmsted: Olmstead or Olmsted.
Okay so the last two would make more sense to local residents but there you go.
Soda: Pop, or Soda?
Weather or Whether?
Blue or Blew?
Thye speak English In Australia, America, New Zealand, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, North Ireland, and other countries that slip my mind right now right? You sure you want to count all those words?
How about all the different car company names that came and went?

How many words are there in the English language?
No one knows. But that hasn't stopped an operation known as the Global Language Monitor from estimating* that—as of this writing—there are exactly 988,968 words in English. GLM has done a remarkable job suckering even the respectable press into believing that we're on the verge of adding the millionth word to English—at which point we'll presumably see another flurry of articles about GLM. Even so, its claim is a bogus one.
The problem with trying to number the words in any language is that it's very hard to agree on the basics. For example, what is a word? If run is a verb, is the noun run another word? What about the inflected forms ran, runs, and running? What about words with run as a base, such as runner and runnable and runoff and runway? Are compounds, such as man-bites-dog, man-child, man-eater, manhandle, man-hour, man of God, man's man, and men in black, to be counted once or many times?
It's kind of long article, so go here for the rest: http://www.slate.com/id/2139611/

One of the more common questions that arrive for the Q&A section asks how many words there are in the English language. Almost as common are requests for the average size of a person’s vocabulary. These sound like easy questions; I have to tell you that they’re indeed easy to ask. But they’re almost impossible to answer satisfactorily, because it all depends what you mean by word and by vocabulary (or even English).

There are only about 250,000 words in use in the English language.
The last count was about 175,000 actual qualifiable words a few years ago.
The number goes up every day because of slang and the incorporation of foreign words into the English lexicon.

If you don't count specialized "jargon" terms, like words from engineering or medicine, etc., there are approximately 200,000 to 300,000 words. If you count the jargon terms, it could be in the millions.
