Historically, certain working/hunting breeds had their tails cut off to prevent damage. Now that tail docking has been outlawed in some countries, many hunting dogs in those countries are experiencing severe tail injuries.

Several reasons. Most people do it because they like the way it looks and also because big dogs have powerful tails that hurt when you get hit by them and because they have a tendency to injure themselves by banging their tails repeatedly on objects. I have two Boxers and one Dobie. All have docked tails done at the time of birth which I had no control over. However, after researching docking I feel that it is a necessary procedure for certain breeds. None of my dogs are ear cropped because it serves no purpose other than aesthetics.

Back when dog breeding was first started it was considered "Fashionable" to have your dogs have short tails.
Also, it served the practical purpose of wehn they would go hunting, it was less noise to worry about if you have a stub of tail it's not going to hit anything.

Nowadays, it's mainly done for tradition.

I have a Scottish Terrier/Schnauzer, and neither her ears or tail are cut.

There really is no GOOD reason why they do it. I think the people cut the tails are cruel because for a while the dogs are in pain but eventually they learn to live with it. It's not normal though, there's no good reason.

on certain breeds they will clip ears and tail. mostly because it's an accepted way for those breeds to look. dobermans and boxers come to mind.

it was necessary for working dogs to prevent them from getting caught in certain situations- i.e bushes or traps during rescue missions.
