Technically nobody knows the benefit from drinking tap water versus drink water from a fountain.
In theory, you could suspect that fountain water can be somehow polluted but if it is not polluted the difference is the cost, the fountain water would be cheaper.

Here is some info for you:

The provision of tap water requires a massive infrastructure of piping, pumps, and water purification works. The cost of tap water is a small fraction of that of bottled water, often as little as 0.01%.

A water fountain or drinking fountain is designed to provide drinking water and has a basin arrangement with either continuously running water or a tap. Modern indoor drinking fountains may incorporate filters to remove impurities from the water and chillers to reduce its temperature.

So basically tap water is running through your drinking fountain. :-)

Most 'fountains' are run 'directly from the water system' in the city ... but there may be 'filters' in them, and 'coolers' so if there are the water may be 'slightly different' ... but otherwise, it's just 'tap water' with a 'really expensive system' of delivery.
