Whenever I am online, I leave my messenger on . Sometimes people on my list IM me and want to talk to me, usually when I am in the middle of doing something, like writing an email or reading something on the Internet. As a result of that, I might be a little slow in responding or I might be a little quiet and do not say much. People would get upset because I do not give them my full attention. I don't get it. I mean they initiate the talk when I am busy with stuff and I am being nice to talk to them. I do not get mad even then they disturb me like that. Do they have the right to be upset?

They really have no reason to be upset. When people message sometimes and you respond they take it as you are not busy and want to continue talking. the only thing you can do it tell them ur busy and can talk very little. Its nothing to get upset about. i had a few friends who were the same way.

No. But you might want to set an away message if your not using your IM and can respond back to someone. If you do respond to someone and they sent the IM to you over 5 min ago, I would let them know sorry I was doing "whatever" that you just read the IM.
Now if someone gets upset over that, I would not get upset myself, that person is just lost for something to do and is blowing steam off on the wrong person.

It happens to a lot of people. Really they do have a right to get upset, honestly all I do if I am really busy with something else, I just write then a short note, busy will get back to ya shortly, or......will ck in later, sorry am really into something right now. Or.....just let them know you are there, and will get back to them. It doesn't take any more time to just answer than it does to ignore them!

Put up an away message. Even still, I put up the "away" message and people still engage me and want my full attention. I don't think that's fair of them. If you ignore them sometimes to get work done, while you are "away", that seems like enough to me.
IM should be casual not a chore. It's not like a phone call.

If you have an away message on, or they know you always do this, they do not have the right to be upset. If it was that urgent, they'd pick up the phone and call you.

Here's my solution for times like this: Set an away message that says "I'm multi-tasking right now, so please bear with me and I'll answer you as soon as I can. Please know that this conversation is not the only thing going on at the moment and allow accordingly."

Can you not put up the message that you are "working"?
That works for me. Then if they want to message, they usually understand that I may be a moment or two before responding. Otherwise you can say you are "busy" also...

Well I do something similar, though what you should do is either
a) put up an away message, or
b) respond to them and tell them you are preoccupied and will be with them in a minute

An Away message, a Busy message or Not On-line should sort that out.

Just let them know you are busy and to give you time. nothing wrong with that and if you really dont want to be bothered just go as invisible...only respond if someone checks to see if you are there and you have the time .

Turn on your "busy" or "away" icon to avoid this problem in the future.

I don't think they should have been mad. It wouldn't take long to say "just a sec" though.
