The whole month's salary thing was invented by the diamond industry to sell more and bigger diamonds. Don't fall for it. It's not a tradition; it's a sales campaign.
Likewise, quality over quantity is a matter of how you look at it. If you're considering the engagement ring as a purely financial investment, then that's definitely the way to choose. If the lady feels that the purer the stone, the purer the love, then it's also a good way of choosing. If, on the other hand, your lady wants something flashier and doesn't care about the resale value of the ring, then pick a bigger stone and let her have her fun with it.
The most important thing to do is to consult with the lady! Some women prefer quality over quantity, and others vice versa. Some dislike diamonds and want something very different (says the woman who chose a sterling silver frog as an engagement ring because she dislikes diamonds and has lots of other animal-shaped silver rings), and some don't even want a ring. I visited a personal wedding web site a few years back where the 'engagement ring' was the new computer he got his lady because she didn't wear jewelry.
If all goes as planned, your lady will be wearing this ring every single day for the rest of her life. Give her a say in picking it. Then find something she'll love at a pricetag you feel you can afford. How much is that? Only you and your wallet know for sure.

No set rule on how much to spend. This "one month salary thing" not true....everyone is getting it wrong. That idea came from a DeBeers Diamond slogan (which I love) "How Else Can Two Months Salary Last Forever?" Spend what you can afford but make sure you know what your intended likes. I personally didn't want anything larger than 1 carat and it had to be white gold. If she is unhappy with what you buy, it could end up costing you more! Good luck!

Traditionally an engagement ring should be sold before the wedding to help kit out your new home. Therefore tot up how much this is going to cost and spend that amount, however do not forget to keep the tradition.

Tradition states two months salary. But I really don't think it's appropriate any more. Money is for the future, for a house, etc.
My ex spent just under one months wage on my engagement ring. It was perfect. The important thing is to get a ring that the woman will be happy wearing for the rest of her life. Price is not important.

Actually your supposed to spend 3 months of your salary.
I suggest you make a weekend occasion of it, go to the Diamond capital of the world, Amsterdam!!
That's where all the wonderful South African Diamonds come in and you will have a great choice given its Euros your paying and their are so many top Jewellers to choose from who don't charge London prices!
That where I got mine and believe me it was worth it, not only did I get the ring I wanted but had a great romantic weekend also...
Congratulations and happy shopping!

You will need to spend a lot to so it looks good. Regardless of what people say, if she dreams of a big rock, she will never be happy without one.
If you want a great deal (and live in the UK) take her for a cheap weekend to Belgium and go to Ghent. There is a big gem dealers area of the town and the amount you save will more than make up for the costs of a dirty weekend.

You can always get her a nice solitaire maybe 3/8 karat or so, then you can get a wrap or a guard for a wedding set. Remember it isnt the size of the diamond. If she really loves you, she wont care what size the diamond is. Besides, why put yourself into debt right off the bat before getting married. Go practical not overboard.

Spend what you can afford, maybe push the boat a little but it's no good getting engaged then being too skint to enjoy the engagement or have a wedding!. (ps - size doesn't matter to a women - looks do so discreetly ask her what type/cut of diamond she prefers) then go from there - good luck with popping the Q !!

You give her your heart, she give you her heart. Isn't that enough already ?
You said you love her, you've promised her, you took her to dinner, she still need an engagement ring ? after that ? wedding dress, wedding ring, wedding party, a house, a car, children. Wow...lots of costs in front of you man...
If you don't know how much you have to spend on your engagement ring...just find something really nice. Bracelet or necklace are good too.

I was always led to belive a months wages were the case, but if your intended loves you and you manage to get a stunning ring for less she probably won't mind!
take a note of her tastes as you go shopping together walk past jewelers and see what kind of thing she picks out.
good luck with the proposal and all that follows!
