"...approriate amount of money" - depends on how close you are to the family.
When we had our son, the best gifts were gift cards from "Baby's R Us" - we could buy what we NEEDED.
Of course, some people like to give something personal, and that is fine...but make sure you know what the family NEEDS.

It sounds like you want this to be a casual type of gift, I would suggest a visit to your local 'christian book store' they have many gift items available, even baptism gift sets. All will be 'spiritual' oriented. If the parents are going thru the process of a baptism, then they obviously are a 'faith' based couple, so anything would be appropriate. You can even get a small bible with the child's name printed on it.
You can do gift cards or savings bonds, both will be appreciated. Keep in mind this is a special event for the parents.

Savings bonds are always a good idea. Perhaps a gift card to a book store for Mom and Dad to buy books for their new baby.

I would do a savings bond or some money - depending on how close to them you are I'd keep it in the neighborhood of $50.

Also depending on how religious the family is there are like baby bibles (my first bibles etc) If they aren't very religious then I would go with a savings bond

I like the idea of a U.S. treasury bond. You could open a savings account.
