I believe in God, I do not hide the fact that I am a God-loving God fearing individual... I consider myself to have more faith than a church full of "hypocrites" who show up every week to pray away their sins.... This is one of the main reasons I do not go to church... too many people passing judgment. I believe in respecting others beliefs even if they choose to be atheist.. I do not believe in shoving my beliefs down peoples throats with a holier than thou attitude.. That is one thing that annoys me about the judgmental hypocrites that attend church.... these religious freaks get on their soap box and think that for some reason they have been appointed to save people from eternal hell... and have a right to cast judgment on peoples beliefs and lifestyles....

So far I have been pretty much able to resist.
Although it does feel good at the time, I believe it causes more damage than good in the long run. It gives a poor image of atheists to those that are havering.
Also, there is the vague possibility that the fundie will actually read a positive response and go learn something new. The possibility of decreasing the ignorance level here is something we should try for.

You must understand that everyone is looking for a sense of belonging, to feel special in a world of unknown. They are searching for the answers to life's most daunting questions. And although I agree with you that they can sometimes be childish and/or out of their minds, they are just afraid of the truth and you can't blame anyone for being afraid. Of course I am referring to the fundies because I have met many religious people that are smart, polite, and friendly.

I try only to attack ideas, dogma, and opinions and not be personal. Sometimes I fall short of that.
But to be honest, beliefs on the magnitude of absurdity of the bible being a literal historical document, the Earth is 6,000 years old, and Christ is going to descend from the clouds as a super hero and rapture all the Christians should be treated as absurd. I mean, if someone got on TV and said we need to make an offering to Poseidon, we'd think he was nuts, right?

This reasoning sounds really intelligent.
Does this this make you better than them? Just kind of puts you on the same level.
I always find it ammusing when people antagonize someone and then get offended at a response they know they are going to get. Sounds kind of stupid.
If I dont believe, I dont belive, that is my choice, why make such an issue out of it, move along and be more productive with yourself.

Geez, this is bad, but I had to snap at my boyfriend's Born Again mother. She's always trying to pick a fight with me ever since she found out that I'm Atheist. I try my best to be polite. And when she heard that he and I were planning to move in together and eventually get married, she had her friggen church group call my cell phone all night to try to save me!!! She stopped in my boyfriend's place while I was there and my boyfriend went out to the store. It was on. My boyfriend walked in on us having a screaming competition. And then she started crying so she can look like the victim in front of him, but he didn't buy it. He knows I don't start fights, but his mother does. Things are still tense between us. I still get sent pahmplets.

I find that the most that we can do is simply force them to confront their beliefs. You can't force intelligence. You have to let them find it. The best we can do is show them they door. They have to open it.
In other words, I tend to be very confrontational. I don't insult because I'm not in middle school. On the other hand, I won't put up with stupidity.

Indeed, on many occasions. But, I try to answer polite questions with equally polite answers, even if I feel the asker is less intelligent or under-educated.

"Shouting them down" does not accomplish anything except maybe prove that you are not adult. They feel as strongly about their beliefs as you do.
Give logical answers to "adult" questions and ignore the rest.
