Both drivers have said they are friends and enjoy a friendly competition. Why all the hate when it comes to the fans?

From my perspective from reading articles and from TV coverage and my opinion, I think the hate comes from fans that do not want to see Dale Sr's records broke because of his untimely death. I feel that Jeff and Jr and Jimmie could become half-way friendly rivals with the help of Rick Hendrick.

The hatred from what I can see started after Dale Sr unfortunately passed away. When Jr took on the family responsiblility to stay in racing, Sr fans started a rivalry between the two drivers.
Both Gordon and Earnhardt Jr say that the only rivalry they have is just as drivers competing in a race. I really can't speak for a Jr fan, because I've always been a Gordon fan.
Perhaps a Jr fan can answer ?

I think simply the fans aren't intelligent enough to know what goes on behind closed doors to the fans. We see a small glimspe of the life they lead behind those walls. Everyone has had a tragedy in their lifetime and I think the animosity has been laid to rest. Although, some of the fans hasn't. If your a true Gordon or Dale Jr. fan you'll respect them for what decisions that they make!!!! I think the gloves are off. Their teammates now.......

Of course, they better be or Gordon may fall back in the standings next year and drift out to sea just like Stewart is doing this year. Hendricks has a goal in bringing Jr. onboard, create a legend and groom Jr. to possibly be his successor as team owner someday.

Its the same why with all sports...the fans have their favorites and the actual player/drivers are all friends. Of course things heat up sometimes where emotions are running, but in the end, things work out and everyone goes home friends. As far as the fans, we keep each other worked up.

I really don't know. Jeff is a good driver and Jr is a good driver. I will cheer for Jr, but it really looks like it is going to be Jeffs year.

its the FANS that dont like the drivers...not the racers they have been friends before Jr. started racing..and Dale Sr. was a big mentor to Gordon
