an entire civilization was born and formed around Gods with names and temples and what not!
so why not believe in something more evident then a ghost???????? ONE crossed man vs an entire cultural foundation! I think this needs to be revisited!
in case you do not know what I am talking about

ZEUS , APOLLO ,ARIES, HERA, ATHENA..................

DO YOU CHOOSE NOT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM OR ARE YOU AFRAID you might find more validation and your entire theory blows out the window???
The Parthenon was build for Athena!
have you ever educated your self in that department???

and by the way - they do not represent a religion as each of them stand for something completely different!

I recently wrote a short article related to this subject. It's not a direct answer to your question but you may find the answer you're looking for.

Although Christians believe in only one God, this is not what the original Hebrew scriptures tell us. In the first chapter of Genesis, as well as in 2601 other places in the Old Testament. the word God is translated from the Hebrew word 'ĕlôhîym which literally means gods. It's plural.

In the beginning, the gods created the heavens and the earth. Jehovah (yehôvâh) isn't mentioned until Gen 2:4, after the seventh day. At that point, he took over possession of the earth. The word earth comes from the Hebrew 'erets ,which can mean either the Earth as a whole or an area of land.

The Bible speaks of other gods…either by name - i.e. Baal, Ashtoreth or by insinuation. For example: Ex. 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. And Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image.

Since Christianity is a monotheistic religion, the plurality is, and always has, been ignored. Throughout history the translators of the Bible have always translated the plural word as a singular.

There are many similarities in some of the doctrines and other beliefs (such as Creation or the Flood) between the worlds religions.

I believe that two possibilities exist to explain the similarities between different religions both past and present.

Yhovah may have been known by different names by people that spoke different languages and He may have had different plans for the different cultures. One good example of this is the fact that Muslims, who are descended from Abraham, call God Allah and certainly live by different religious doctrine.

Though as a Christian, I‘m less inclined to believe that explanation covers all the worlds religions. I’m more inclined to believe that Yhovah is the God of Jews and Christians (and as Allah to the Muslims) whereas there were (and still may be) other gods who were (are) in charge of other cultures, civilizations and nations. As a matter of fact, The Aramaeans used the Babylonian pronunciation Bel for Baal; Bel became the Greek Belos who was identified with Zeus. It’s quite possible that many, if not all, of the gods that we consider false or mythical may be quite real.

The scriptures clearly tell us that there are other gods (not to be confused with idols which are mentioned separately). The surviving religions of the world, as well as some extinct ones, show many similarities and there are historical clues that confirm this. Most Christians are simply ignorant of what was originally written about the other gods and simply go along with what they’re taught. It’s considered heresy to acknowledge the existence of the other gods. The idea of only one God comes from a time when Paganism was a major religion. To keep people from “becoming Pagans” the Jews (and later, the Christians) developed a monotheistic attitude. Instead of Yhovah being the only god worthy of our loyalty, praise and worship, it was (and is) taught that He was the ONLY god…period.

Now, to sum it up, all (or almost all) of the worlds religions, both past and present, began from one of the two options.: Yhovah or one of the other gods.

Hope this answers your question.

So have U ever slowed down a bit & asked Urself why so many gods?? I mean if U, for example, were Truly a god, why would U need Help from Other gods??? What "Super Powers" are U Lacking and wouldn't that mean (if Ur Lacking) that U Weren't Really a god??? I for example have & serve a God who Created the Entire Universe & All that is in it, which one of Ur gods has done that??? Then again, the gods U speak of were kinda "Johnny come lately Types", I mean that they weren't even around before many other False gods created by Other Men were??? My "One Crossed Man" was Also God Incarnate & the Perfect Sacrifice for All Mankinds Sinful State Forever!!! So tell me now, exactly how often & what do U still have to Sacrifice to Ur gods to keep them happy??? It used to be Little Children, is it still??? John

You might be right. The ancient Greek civilization set the foundation for modern democracy, philosophy, astrology, medicine, art, science, and the orgy. Having visited Greece and seen and experienced the Parthenon. I think maybe there's something more to the God's of ancient Greece. Maybe these God's just got lost over the centuries, or maybe the Christian have buried them in there quest for power and wold domination. What was your question?

i don't understand...are you saying that all the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses are just as valid? because the greeks believed that they could go to temples and be cured by a god called Asclepius and his daughters.

Medicine stops illness, not gods. So they weren't perfect in that respect. i'm probably missing the point tho, add some additional details cos im confffuuused. ta.

It doesn't matter how many gods there are. They fall under the umbrella of a single mystery.

IF you see someone worship and idol in a temple, it doesn't mean that ANYONE expects the statue to get up and walk around. It's there to give your mind something to grab ahold of when they address issues that can't be explained or are not completely understandable by human beings.

The Bible God is too boozed up to figure what is going on! There are nights and days in the Heaven that God created to house the Holy Trinity. At night they must switch the lights off and go to sleep. The Bible writers are telling us how it is when their God wakes up in the morning with a terrible hangover… Psalm 78:65 “THEN THE LORD AWOKE AS FROM SLEEP, AS A MAN WAKES FROM THE STUPOR OF WINE”* (*too much worship? spiritually speaking, of course!) Numbers 28:7 (NIV) The accompanying drink offering is to be a quarter of a hin of FERMENTED DRINK (KJV a quart of "strong wine") with each lamb* (*according to the Bible stories, the Jews used to sacrifice animals to this Bible God by the thousands, even when the Jews were starving to death and had to eat their own children for dinner, the Priest always ate from the sacrificed animals! –Lam 4:10) POUR OUT THE DRINK OFFERING TO THE LORD at the sanctuary* (*no wonder God wakes up with a horrendous hangover puffing smoke off his Holy nostrils! Psa 18:8). Revelation 14:10-11 (NIV) [Jesus says] "he, too, WILL DRINK OF THE WINE OF GOD'S FURY* (*Only God knows strong booze!), which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.* (*sheer Boozer God talk) He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever… The primitive Bible writers came up with a Boozer God that is very narcissistically oriented threatening to slaughter anybody not worshipping him the right way “without rest day and night!” This God turned out to be a sadistic psychopath in desperate need of a shrink! The Bible writers generously provided PRIESTS of their own Levy family to teach the correct way of worshipping the God that they put together! Deuteronomy 17:12-13 (NIV) The man who shows contempt for the judge or for the PRIEST who stands ministering there to the Lord your God MUST BE PUT TO DEATH! You must purge the evil from Israel* (*it is an EVIL worthy of death in the eyes of the Bible God to question the priest/preacher!). ALL THE PEOPLE WILL HEAR AND BE AFRAID, AND WILL NOT BE CONTEMPTUOUS AGAIN* (*Holy Mafia warning! Or is it a terrorist threat?). To add insult to injury all Christians want to “be with Jesus” in Heaven for ever and ever. For them, the Jewish God evolved into a sweeter Jesus. The old Bible God forced his chosen people to slaughter and cook their own children for dinner, so Christians prefer Jesus for the original Bible God that is why THERE ARE SO MANY OBJECTIONS ABOUT JESUS BEING GOD! Jesus only threatened to kill children in the wrong Church… NOT IN MY CHURCH! (Rev 2:23)

No. It's just that all these "gods" I learned about in high school English Literature class through books that recognized them as pagan and mythological.

None of those books ever once mentioned the God of the Hebrews, so your entire question is without all merit.

Simon T, above, has a point.
All, the ancient gods or just as valid as each other, not saying they are valid, but they are all as valid as the next.

Be it, Greek, Roman, Norse, Germanic, Anglo-Saxon or Celtic.
Take your pick, you have a lot to choose from.

And they all have equal validity as all the other thousands of gods and goddesses that have be the creation of mankind.

Why not Odin, Thor, Freyr, Freyrja, Loki . . . .

Or Osiris, Ra, Isis, Anubis, Geb . . .

allow people believe what they want....
if they are happy
and comforted
and hurt no one

"your" 12 vs. 1 does not supply the "correct" choice
