I have 5 girls. #4, Justine, will be 16 in Jan and has started to ask about having a Sweet 16. My older three never had any interest in having one. We did something big when they turned 18 instead. I find Sweet 16s kind of pointless. How do you feel about them?

Sweet 16s where i live tend to be the size of weddings and I know my daughter isn't thinking of anything less

5 girls, god bless!
I have twin girls that are 17 and they went to several Sweet 16s last year, most of which were bigger events than my wedding! The whole point of a Sweet 16 in the past was to allow a family to announce to society that their daughter was available for marriage. Since no one gets married at 16 anymore, it's now just a gigantic birthday party.
I like the idea of doing something big when you turn 18 better and that's what I plan on doing in November when my girls turn that age. At 18 youre legally an "adult", graduating from high school, going off on your own etc. I think those are more important things to celebrate than just driving. (where i live they don't get to drive until theyre 17 anyway)
I would tell you daughter that if she want's to do something big for her 16th, then youre not going to do something big for her 18th. Let her think it over, but you of course have the last call.
Best wishes

Sweet sixteens are a important part of a girls life for most girls ,they are maturing and finding themselves, they get to drive , and it is a life of changes that come after that. Girls really like the 16 thing because most feel like a princess for a day. My daughter just turned 16 in may , and she was very happy to have a party thrown in her honor and it was a lot of fun. If she really wants one now instead of 18, I would say let her have it. If she wants both then maybe something really small now with a friend or two and then big at 18.

I think that the sweet 16's that you see on TV with the spoiled little brats that aren't even happy with the thousands of dollars their parents spend on them are rediculous! It doesn't teach the child anything except how to get everything they want! I would say if you've done something special for all your other girls when they turn 18 then stick to that with your 4th daughter. That way you also won't have to hear from your other 3 daughters how the youngest daughter is spoiled and gets way more than they ever did.

Ask her what she would rather have you do have a sweet 16 do something really big at 18 ? I personally kind of like the sweet 16 partys and we usually turn them into a slumber party like you know have them do their hair and their nails . I rather like that idea and it keeps the girls close . good luck .

I think that they can be special. 18 to me is a bigger year as well but it really depends on how the child feels. 16 is the year that you are old enough to drive, old enough to work, and old enough to be taken a little more seriously by adults. I say that if she would rather have a sweet 16 than she should get it.

I think it all depens on the child if she'd like one or not. Plus can you afford one? These things can be expensive. My friends had their sweet 16's and they liked it. I didn't want one when I turned to 16, but that was me. Now my sister who's got some years to go to reach 16, wants one. So I got some years to save up for it.
It all depends on you.
