I think that that is a very disrespectful question. Where do you get off asking a question like that? My grandma Ethel who recently passed away did not smell "old." She was a sweet lady and I think you should think about other things like war and disease before you type something stupid like this. I don't find this kind of humor funny. You should be ashamed of yourself.

the answer is yes.......
Yes they do smell and so will you when you get old!
and Yes it is a form of rotting.
As people age the body stops functioning as it did in youth.
Organs no longer properly work and the skin then no longer
reproduces healthy skin. It becomes very thin and opaque
and the natural flaking increases and lays between creases.
Also they secrete fluids throught the skin which are from
organs no longer properly functioning. Beyond this they may
also be incontinant from loss of muscle...
Having worked in retirement homes I learned to be tollerant of these things and concentrat on appreciating them for
all they have learned and can share. They are a wealth of enjoyable knowledge and experience if you take advantage of the blessing they have become by living to this Beyond Ripe Ol Age.
Remember to treat them as you will want to be treated when
you are old in pain and smell.

you hang out with the wrong people. usually their homes have a distinct odor but most of the people i've known don't. the men usually smell of pipe tobacco or to much after shave and many of the women smell like face powder. i love that smell.

The scientific term is "nonenal", and the odor comes from a fatty acid in the skin being broken down over time through oxidization.
There's actually a whole line of products in Japan aimed at chemically suppressing the odor.
