It sounds like an Eastern Religion philosophy, like Confucius or Buddha. I do not know the source, but it probably means the same thing as "He who does not learn from history is destined to repeat it." and "It's not the destination, it is the journey." Probably in other words it is saying that the path you took and the way you took it is more what your life actually is than any specific moment or destination, and you can't appreciate where you are and what you are unless you know how you got there or what it cost(figuratively). Old home wisdom, "you can't appreciate anything unless you earned it." Same deal...

The whole point of life is to learn from our actions and our mistakes so that we can figure out what to do in the future. If you never learn to look back and analyze your own past and your own behavior, then you're destined to keep on the same track for the rest of your life rather than learning, changing, and moving on to something bigger and better.

I feel it means that no matter how successful we get , we should be humble and never forget where we started from. This is because success makes a man arrogant and proud and he begins to look down upon others who have not yet reached success. So no matter how successful one gets, if arrogance is ruling him, he will never be successful in the true sense.

If you can't look back on your past experiences and learn from them, then you'll never be able to use what you know now from those events to help you get to where you need to be.
