one ton for cooling is equal to 12,000 Btu/Hr

If you cooling load is 24,000 Btu/Hr, you need a 2 ton unit.

There are some general numbers for estimating cooling load in Btu/ sq feet for the type of building you have.

1 ton of refrigeration is the amount of heat in Btu's removed from 1 ton (2,000 lbs) of water at 0°C to change it to ice at 0°C. over a 24 hour period.
2000lb x 144 Btu/lb = 288,000 Btu..... 288,000/24
= 12,000 Btu/hr.
Therefore, a 1 ton heat pump does the same work as 1 ton of refrigeration but in reverse and will transfer 12,000 Btu/hr of heat to 1 ton of circulating air.
