I am moving to another country soon and want to make sure I have at least a functional ability in the language. Is there a list anywhere that shows how often words are used in daily life, how important they are, etc.? so I can decide on what I will spend my little time learning? Thanks.

I would choose: life and living. food, clothing, housing interaction with people, paying, laws too.
Medical: know the terms you need to know. flu and stuff. painkiller... antibiotics...
travel, so you can get around and ask the way.
calling, in case you need outside help when there.
you need the daily stuff mostly. which way is? how do I? where can I? should I? those things. then if you have one good dictionary with you you can manage just fine.

Most language courses will teach you the fundamentals of the language first. Try out something like that.
