Pardon the atheists around here who are rude beyond all compare.
Youth ministry major here...serving as youth ministry intern this summer...
Low budget, then check out Youth Specialties.
The truth is, when you're trying to reach youth in today's culture, just be yourself and be their friend....programs fail, books and cd's work sometimes...but relationships should be the core.

Have you ever heard of "Father's Love Letter", type that in if you haven't and download a short video of a "letter from God to us". It's so lovely, and no judgements or anything like that, just love. And another one called "pathway to peace" with inspiring pictures and verses. All free!
And I don't know where you live, but at the Dollar Tree stores around here, there is a book called "Light for my Path" and only a dollar with bible verses & quotes from various people thorughout history broken down into sections like "charity" and "God's love" etc.
Don't u just love God? I love to think He gave us computers just so we could connect easier, faster & to people we would never "reach" otherwise:o] Have a nice one sister.:o[]

I taught 10-11 year olds in my church for a while. I found a lot of resources on the web that were free. You could get lesson plans and ideas for crafts, skits, stories, etc.
My kids loved doing skits. We would do each one a couple of times so that they could take turns being other characters.

Oh Yeah! As a youth specialist myself you must check out Ron Luce and his organization. They are great an offer some complimentary resources online. As well as youth events, etc. that you can take your youth to. I think his website is www.battlecry.com (although, it may be .org). He has a "Christian" version of myspace. Networking for students and youth leaders.
Also, if you want to, add me to your contacts. My fiance is a youth pastor and we work with students. We are currently setting up a leadership program for youth and youth leaders.

John Piper's (pretty cheap) book called Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ. The chapters are short enough to expect youth to read, and meaty enough to challenge their minds, and have good discussion topics. Also, my youth pastor did the "90 day challenge" with us. Pair up with a friend, and read a portion of scripture each day for 90 days. If you or your friend forget a day, you both start over together. It encourages them to talk to a friend about the WORD. Perhaps, with summer so short, you try a 45 day challenge.

Teach them as if they were grown and just talk with them own what they think about life and the bible. Let them tell you what they think a pasage is trying to say not what you think. help them under stand what it is to take Gods path. The love and hope they must have for all.
You will get a lot of flack from the old farts in your church for this. BUT you would be right.

i have a great two-fold answer for you that will interest your youth and grow your youth group. i don't know the ages of your youth, but even early teens can understand this & everyone should know this info if they consider themselves a Christian. (it's great for the entire church.)
- show by dvd or vhs tape the "understanding the endtime" level 1 course by irvin baxter, jr. in level 1, there are 10 1-hour videos.
if you don't want to purchase them, you can watch online free (endtime.com). there are question/answer sheets you can inexpensively purchase (1-800-endtime) & have discussion after the video. (irvin baxter has been studying endtime prophecy for 40 years.)
as you know, endtime prophecy is addressed throughtout the Bible, not just in the Book of Revelation. you will quickly find out that we are the endtime generation & we are suppose to understand & be prepared. it's not scary, but extremely interesting, exciting & enlightening. everybody these days is interested in the endtimes!
2- to help grow your youth group (& church), Endtime Youth Corp is just the thing for you. if you will email vince@endtime.com or call 1-800-endtime , he will come to your church & get it started for you. it is about outreach in your area to youth, inviting them to this youth function (Endtime Youth Corp service) held at your church once each month, & peaching & teaching them scripturally of the times we are living in & how relevant the Bible is to us NOW.
of course, the object of this is service is to save these kids (& their families) by obeying the Gospel unto salvation, & at the same time grow your church.

well, depend on what you wanna work with the kids.
You talking games? messages? sermons? application?
I know a great tool: the Bible, I bet you knew that too. The best man, I gotta tell ya. It has the answer to everything, and I mean everything. Try it and see if you like it, and tell us what you think about it.

One idea is to turn them on to praise and worship music such as Jars of Clay, The News Boys etc.. ☺

Are you looking for books to read together or lesson plan type books? I would say read the "Left Behind" series. They are great and will really help your youth learn the importance of a life with God. Hope that helps. God bless you.
