You're not an idiot, and yes, the higher the SPF number the more protection you get and the longer you can stay out in the sun. SPF 2 and 4 are for people who already have a base tan and want to add to it, SPF 8 is for people with no tan who want to get a little color, and any SPF over 15 is for people who want to block the harmful UV rays completely. WARNING: They still have not developed a truly waterproof sunscreen, so you need to re-apply after you go swimming or snorkeling or SCUBA-diving...you get the idea.

Basically, the SPF means the number of times longer you can stay in the sun without burning than if you didn't wear a sunblock.

So an SPF 15 means you can stay in the sun 15 times longer without burning than if you didn't wear a sunblock at all. However, to keep the SPF at 15, you need to reapply frequently.....every 2 hours, otherwise the SPF drops.
