I have always been a very modest woman, I have never worn a skirt any shorter than 4" or 5" below my knees. I never cross my legs or make any movements that could make me expose anything. When I go to the beach I never wear even a swimsuit, instead I wear pants and shirt to cover myself up completely.

I disagree with you completely.

First of all, modest is not the "greatest" virtue. I'd much rather be compassionate or something like that of the sort. It will benefit the world a lot more than covering up your chest.

Secondly, God created the body and it's a beautiful thing. Why hide it?

No I think honesty is more important than modesty. If you are honest with yourself and others -things like modesty will come naturally.

It's odd how some woman turn being over-dressed into a virtue and make their clothing a form of false modesty. I've known women who were more modest naked than most woman are fully clothed. Modesty is an attitude and a personal conviction not a costume.

It can even be argued that being over-dressed actually draws more attention to you and defeats the idea behind modesty.

Life is meant to be enjoyed and if you put boundaries on your pleasures to obtain a higher spiritual truth then this is good. If you cover up for other reasons then it's no longer a virtue.

I believe that you are confusing modesty with something else entirely. Perhaps shyness, perhaps some "religious authority's" ideas of sin, morality, and temptation. The human body is a GIFT of the creator. If HIDING that beautiful gift was intended then we would have been entirely covered with hair to hide our shape or we would have been born with clothing. I do NOT believe that the creator intended this at all. it's ONLY humans that percieve nakedness as a form of "immorality", NOT the Creator. It is entirely possible for a toally naked person to be totally modest AND it is entirely possible for a woman, covered head to toe in a Burkha to be IMMODEST. It is the INTENT that determines which is which. The Intent of the person his/herself AND the intent of the observer as well.
The human body is an outward expression of the Blessings of the creator. And based on that, I believe the the GREATER transgression is the person "hiding' from what the creator intended. Although, dressing for the weather is another thing entirely. It would be unhealthy to go around nude in a snowstorm, so by all means clothe yourself for physical comfort but certainly NOT to appease someone else's idea of outward show of Morality. At least that MY view on all of this.

Brightest Blessings

For the most part, your modesty will only affect yourself. There are far better virtues - ones that have a real impact on others.

I cannot see how you came to this conclusion. Perhaps there are other reasons you prefer to cover up, and you use modesty as a justification. It is worth thinking about, because if true there are things you need to come to terms with.

While in some instances it is good to be modest (no one likes a boasting fool)

Personally I think the best virtues are ones which actually help mankind in a proactive way.

We can preach about who is more virtuous all day long, but the best you can do is get of your bum and actually DO something good.

While people argue at church about so called morals, the homeless still need homes and the starving still need food.

Modesty is not the greatest virtue for everybody, a pole dancer would have trouble making a living, religious con-men would have trouble conning people and so on. Guys would have a lot of trouble at the urinal and be unable to pee.

Are you sure you have anything anyone would be interested in looking at in a salacious way?

No. Obeying God is. To some, modesty may be a way to demonstrate that; but modesty per se is not the core point. Even the Lord tol Isaiah to go naked (Isaiah 20).

You're a funny woman. You were brought up improperly. I consider myself a modest woman, however I wear mini skirts and bikinis. I would not wear a short dress without panties though: that's extreme. You should seek help from a psychiatrist.

According to the Bible holiness is the greatest of all virtues. I think you will find a lot of nuns, Arab women, and Amish women in hell.
PS, I am certainly for modesty, but keep your priorities right.

In "The Book of Virtues" by William J. Bennett modesty is not listed. However it is important, no doubt.
