Create a fake pedigree including such buzzwords as "rooted in shaolin arts, historically tied to Budo and Okinawan karate". That's how most do it. Then make your own art up as you go, calling yourself a 10th dan, which, of course, everyone knows means you're the biggest, baddest mofo in this art. Make it look good by saying you can't compete because it is too deadly, or you won't compete because that makes it a sport and not a true art. Then, for good measure, call anyone who does competitions a cocky martial sportist. Challenge entire schools by calling them out as fake martial artists, but say that you are in tune with the truth of martial arts, which dictates that an enemy who has risen to the defensive is truly beaten already. That sounds very mystical.
Now add one of the asian religions, like Taoism or Buddhism, and claim that a) you would be out of balance with the world if you competed, as "The sage does not strive and through his non-striving, he completes his works.", or b) you cannot compete because the enemy has defeated himself by concentrating on defeating you too much, a boy, a master, one eye on the destination, etc...
As a final touch, claim to have killed 102 men in a secret, underground kumite that was outlawed 10 years ago. That's a nice, round number, 102. Sounds believable. Bam, now you are an instant grandmaster, unreproachable by the naysayers. And you sound all philosophical.

Yep, because being a grandmaster has nothing to do with skill level, it has more to do with politics, so a guy who can't fight for sh1t still can become a grandmaster if he has good organizational skills. Unless of course your last name happens to be Kasparov, then you definitely are considered very skilled and can call yourself a grandmaster without throwing a single punch.

Probably.. People are pretty gullible. I personally think the entire dan/kyu system is not good for karate. It makes it so you judge someone by their supposed rank, and not their individual merit. You should give it a try. We should start a karate organization dedicated to "everyone a grandmaster," certifying all members (for a small fee:) of course) as a 10th Dan! lol

The average person will believe you because of their ignorance. To become a true grandmaster, you have to become a very high dan, (either 7 or 8), through years of training. After all that training, you still have to be certified my the specific style you practice's federation (such as the ITKDF). But people would still believe you.

I hate to say this becaue it is a reflection of the sad state martial arts is in today, but YES. THEY WILL.
However this is just as much attributed to the gullible nature of people as well as thier total lack of understanding of martial arts if they are a beginner.
If word gets around of you "bitching out", eventually you will lose students or suffer exposure by some martial arts watchdog group that looks to expose fakers.
my advice to you would be to do it in the area of CMA (chinese martial arts) as that tends to be the area of martial arts that has the most "fake" grandmasters who are just making up stuff after watching crouching tiger and fearless a few thousand times.

Yes they will, and believe me, you won't be the only one on that situation.
There are so many so called "grandmasters" who get their butts handed to them and refuse to fight, and yet they have many followers, people's gullibility and shrewd businessmen go a long way.

Grandmasters should not fight without cause. I haven't heard of any who would not protect himself or others. Do you know of such a person? I would be shocked. I doubt if anyone would believe you.

Haha, maybe. You can tell them you don't want to seriously hurt someone with your Grandmaster skills. Some people are bound to believe it!

well im 50/50 if your life is on the line then yes pour it on them . But if they are just wantin to fight you then no refuse to fight, because just because we know certain techniques and so forth , doesn't mean that we should use them. Because we as martial artist should never use what we know unless our lives are at risk
