Because the yuppies will pay more for 'organic' foods. (That gives them 'bragging rights')

I'm guessing they cost more b/c of that very reason. It's harder to produce and harvest crops without the help of pesticides. Someone has to take painstaingly (is that a word?) good care of the farm without a lot of new-age chemicals.
Also, organic farms tend to be smaller than large, commercial farms. In order for the organic farmers to get paid, they need to charge a bit more b/c they have less yield.
Just guesses...I'm not certain.

Because organic farmers are in the minority when it comes to big-business farming. In order for these "little guys" to keep up operation costs they have to charge more just to stay in business and make their efforts profitable. Running a farm of any kind has incredible costs... not only the pesticide/chemical aspect. These organic farmers need our support... they're out there doing good things!

Another way to look at it........ why wouldn't you pay more for CLEAN FOOD????

Support your local and organic farmers..... Shop your local farmers markets! And buy organic in supermarkets! They deserve it.... YOU deserve it!!!

Organic foods cost more because they don't use pesticides. I t is much harder to grow foods without using them becuase all the bugs eat them and harm the plants. When you use pesticides it keeps the bugs off and makes it easier to grow the plants.

That is precisely why they cost more.
It is much more difficult to care for vegetables and fruits using "organic" means than it is to do a mass spraying of chemicals.

When using organic methods it is more time consuming, costs of shipping (for more protection) will most likely be higher as well, and quicker spoilage may even play a factor in this.
Organic fruit is one of the more difficult commodities to keep around as it turns so quickly from ripe to over ripe.

Hope I helped!

lower yields - pesticides and fertilizers produce larger crops with less damage from pests. So the same farm will produce less food and thus have to charge more.

There are ways to increase yields in organic growing but they involve sunk costs so you see that reflected in the price.

And finally because they CAN charge more. It is not mainstream and they know people seeking out organic will pay more for that.

The fact that farmers don't use these chemicals results in less production or crop. This, in turn, means they have to raise their prices.
