As you study the development of Western Christianity, you will understand this concept. The nature religions existed prior to Christianity, and within them the woman was worshipped for her creative ability, the male was recognized as her consort and guardian of the planet, and sex was considered sacred.
When the Roman government decided to create Organized Christianity as a state religion, the drive was not spiritually oriented, but political /financial in nature. The goal was to create a way to control people. The majority of people were uneducated, and could be easily manipulated, especially through their fear of death and the unknown.
Committees were formed to create the guidelines for the new religion, to compile and edit the Bible (to adhere to the goal of the government). Women were demonized, and there was even a committee formed to determine if women actually had souls or not! Sex was defiled, label as evil and only acceptable within marriage. The Doctrine of Original Sin lays the blame to all women for the resulting death of all people (amazing, as death is as natural to this planet as birth). Women were said to tempt men, and they were unable to resistance her sexuality. The demonization of women was done to reduce her belief in her own power, so that she could be controlled by men (government).
This brainwashing has been going on a long time, and there are countless men and women who are under the burden of the guilt, shame and fear that was produced not for the salvation of people, but for their destruction. It is the ultimate in manipulation.
I agree, that God is neighter male nor female, but perhaps both, and could never favor one sex over another. God is the mother/father, that creative energy that produces our universe. The God defined in the Bible is often full of anger and hate, and was contrived to frighten. My understanding of God is based in compassion, and unconditional love.
Please note: it is critical to understand the difference between what Jesus was teaching, and what the Roman government created as religion. These two concepts are vastly different in philosophy and approach. Jesus taught based in compassion, and focused on the internal spiritual development (no church or Bible was used), and the Roman religion focused on the external (Bible, church, priest) as necessary for the relationship with God. Once we are able to see that these two concepts are different, then we can let go of organized religion, and focus on our internal relationship with a compassionate God.

Since the Bible does not mention whether God has male genitalia (a requirement to be called male) it is quite possible that God is male, female, neither or both.
There is really only one reason to belief God is a male: the Bible. It is possible that since the original Hebrew and Greek scriptures were written by men in a society where men were the only leaders, it may have been written with a male bias in which case we could be wrong.
I believe God is male because (according to the scriptures) Jesus called Him Father. I don't believe God will hold it against us if we address Him/Her by the wrong gender since we have no other proof either way.
By the way, even if God is male, it doesn't mean that He "favors one sex over the other". That concept comes from man, not God.

I'm sorry; You are asking why people who believe in the Bible simply accept what the Bible says about God?
Kind of answered your own question, didn't you?
God is referred to in the masculine in Hebrew, so people use the masculine. But you are right, the Bible seems to indicate that God is neither male nor female. But you don't believe the Bible stuff anyway, because you actually met God, and he told you not to believe that Bible. You are smarter than all of the prophets who worked all those miracles.
===edit==
OK, that last statement was a mean shot. But if you don't believe in the Bible, then from where do you get your information about God? And why should we believe you instead of, say Moses, or Jesus?

In the Jewish culture, children were prepared to take adult responsibilities at age 12. Education began earlier and was more intense; everything was focused on training children to enter the adult world by the time they were ready for sexual reproduction. Our culture is very different. A 12-year-old is still a child, not expected to shoulder adult responsiblity. Formal schooling isn't over before the age of 18 or usually 22. So it doesn't make sense culturally for 12 year olds to be sexually active. It's a culture/wisdom thing, not a religious thing. The Bible doesn't specify age, it only specifies that marriage must come first. Do 12 year olds get married in our culture? That's crazy!!

In the English language "He" is used when sex is unknown. God is a spirit. The bible does place men as "leaders". However, women in the bible have significant roles, also. Unlike what some people tend to think. The bible does not say it is okay for a man to be overbearing on a woman. They are supposed to have a mutual respect for each other and work together. Instead of taking other peoples opinions about it. It is best to read what it says for yourself. God is referred to as "Father" because "he" is creator of all.

I know that God is neither male or female. I refer to him as him,he and Father because I see the male gender being in a more authoritive and leadership role than females. I think using him/he is more respectful than it. We do not really have any other term to use so we in our human limits use the male gender-even though we know he has no sex. I call him Father because I know he has the love for me like a Fathers love, caring, unconditional, nurturing. I do not think he favors one sex over the other. I do not see him as a king in the way we know king to be, we have closed our minds so much and limited ourselves to be truly open about what he is. I try to open my mind more so he can show me his goodness and mercy on his level, and not conform to mine. Do you think there is something better to use when we are referring to God? What do you use, I like to know how others address God!

1 Because the bible says he made Adam in his image.
2 People reference what they already know to help them understand new concepts. That's why God was originally assigned a sex by people; because everything sentient around them had a sex.
3 In those days men were considered superior and more important than women so to explain God as something powerful it stands to reason that God would be a he.
I don't think it matters how you imagine God when you are worshiping. And if you don't worship God, then it matters even less.

Jesus said "God is Spirit and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." One has to have a spiritual relationship with God to be able to worship Him. Outward religious rituals is not the worship God seeks. He seeks a relationship from His Spirit to our spirit.
"Father" and "Son" are relational terms, not physical terms. When Jesus talks to us about God the Father, He wants to point out a RELATIONSHIP, not a physical picture.
God does not favor one sex over another. "God created man (human being) in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created THEM."
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." God does not distinguish cultural background, social status or sex. All people are welcome to enter into a relationship with God.

I wouldn't say that it is "sick", but you are on the right track by suggesting that God is neither male of female.
God is the Father of creation, yes. He is the Father of Jesus and all of us, yes. That is why He is referred to as He, HIm, His, Father, etc.
It is our tendancy to place a subject to a gender, but God is neither sex. God is a supreme being and not visible, though He is all around us. His Spirit lives within us, so we take HIm with us all the time. If we do something negative or hurtful, He is displeased...just as our parents would be.
So, while you are correct to say "neither" gender, please keep a peaceful tone and a positive outlook on HIs being. Not only will you be pleasing HIm, but you will get more people to take you serious. Then they will respond in abundance...
Peace to you always

you're right, he has no sex. He's a spirit, a being a of light. But in many languages we need something to describe him, it would be worst if we called him an IT, so we might as well call him HE. He does not favor males of females, but calling God a SHE just sound wrong to me.
