Many of the people answering are likely young and thus don't have families of their own.
That will likely change when they grow up.
In practice, many also might answer "God is more important" just because that's what their family and friends would expect to hear, even though it means little in practical terms (other than that annoying bit where the Christian god taxes her followers 10%).

Why are you stunned, this is RELIGION and SPIRTUALITY
If FAMILY is so darned important, why are there DIVORCE LAWS
Divorce is the BREAK UP of the family unit and 2 out of 5 marriages end in divorce, so it is OBVIOUS, that a strong plurality of people, religious or otherwise, don't believe in the family unit.
40% of the world believes the family unit can and should be broken up.
The statistics on FAILURE TO PROVIDE CHILD SUPPORT is shameful.
And ATHEISTS must share a blame in this too!
Religion has tried to preserve the family unit, but lost ground, often to the Atheists who try and abolish religiously based laws like the OLD divorce laws that were in existance until the 1980s when NO FAULT became the way to go.
Do ATHEISTS support laws that make it EASY to break up the family unit.
Do ATHEISTS make it easy for someone to LEAVE ONE FAMILY and START ANOTHER and ANOTHER
And then we get the TAX BILL for AID TO FAMILIES WITH DEPENDENT CHILDREN

I think it is hard for people to understand the concept of this. I am a Christian . . .and for me I choose to put God in the very center of my life. . .and it is through this that I truly believe everyone else in my life and everything that I attempt to do gets the best of me because through God I am the best that I can be. It works for me. . .

well when Tom Landry took over the Dallas Cowboys his first speech consited of him writing on the blackboard the priorities of the team. it was God , family, football which many players thought it was all wrong. well Tom Landry went on to one of the most successful coaching career ever.
if you put Jesus first in your life then He will take care of your family. it is trusting Jesus for every part of yourlife. and if you are in relationship with Jesus , He will led you to do the best for your family.

Because we are to put God above everything else. The Bible tells us that none come before God. But putting God first and doing His will and following His commandments means that you love your family with all your heart and do everything possible for them. I don't see the conflict.

When I first came here, there was a trend in the forum to ask hypothetical questions concerning giving up your God, or allowing your loved ones to die. You would be surprised how many people would allow their children to die in front of them while never renouncing their religion. It's scary, the hold fantasy can have over reality, and I'm going to get a bunch of thumbs down for saying so.

That people are seriously scary , how can they give up their loved ones for something they aren't even sure that exists. It's simply crazy, and they get angry when called cultists.

I completely agree. My mother and father raised me, nurtured me, and took care of my needs. My husband is my best friend. My son is my entire universe. I see them every day. They love me unconditionally. The Christian God is invisible, does not intervene in anything in my life, and sends billions of people to a fiery pit of torture. It's obvious who loves me. My mother would never set me on fire, no matter what I do.

I entrust my affair to God, surely God sees the servants". So God protected him from the evil consequences of what they planned and the most evil punishment overtook Pharaoh's people. (40:44‑5)
The Holy Prophet said, 'When God loves a slave in my community, He casts love of him into the hearts of His friends, the spirits of the angels and the keepers of His throne, so that they love him.’
'Love of God is a light, the light of God does not come over something without illuminating it.
The skies of Godd o not cause a cloud to appear without it covering whatever is beneath it; the wind of God does not blow on something without it moving. God's water gives life to everything, and from God's earth everything grows. Whoever loves God is given every possession and authority.'
Dutifulness to one's parents comes from the bondsman's correct knowledge of God, since there is no act of worship which will bring the person performing it more quickly to the pleasure of God than being dutiful to believing parents for the sake of God. This is because the right of the parents is derived from the right of God, as long as they are both on the path of the faith and the sunnah, and do not prevent a child from obeying God for the sake of obedience to them, or move him from certainty to doubt, or from abstinence to the desires of this world, or call him to anything which is in opposition to faith and the sunnah. If the situation is like that, then it is an act of obedience to rebel against them, and an act of rebellion to obey them.

If they contend with you that you should associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them. Keep company with them kindly in this world, but follow the way of him who turns to Me, then to Me is your return! (31:15)
As far as companionship is concerned, keep their company and be gentle with them. Endure their hardship just as they endured yours when you were young, and do not withhold from them that which God has made plentiful for you in the way of food and clothes. Do not turn your face away from them nor raise your voice above theirs. To respect them is part of God's command; speak to them in the best possible way and be kind to them. God will not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.
