i am thinking of getting my dog micrichipped, but the concern i have is that it will be really painful and that he won't trust me again for a long time. It sounds silly but my dog is funny about that sorta thing and hes a big baby and i don't want to cause him unnecessary pain.

WOW I love the rescue director. SHe is a "rescue director" and pays someone else to microchip?? Come on my kid (15) has been doing it for years. The only problem she ever had was a rottie that said "NO" Animal control had to muzzle and put him in a head lock.

The needle is MUCH bigger than a vaccine needle but most of the time they are not affected and only affected for a second when they are. White dogs seem to always bleed?? Guess cause they are white. Once its done we give them a meaty treat for being so good and its all forgotten!!!

It is in the best interest of the pet to be microchipped. I just sent this email out today:

Microchipping is when the vet inserts a tiny (about the size of a grain of rice) microchip just under the skin - usually around his shoulder area. This is done by VETs - not lay people.

It hurts no more than when he gets his annual vaccinations.

There are controversies surrounding microchipping and "big brother-ism" - as in, today the dog - tomorrow it's me. But I have the kind of dog people steal and abuse so as soon as I can, I plan to have him chipped - and tattooed as well so he will have not only the chip but a verifiable identifying mark on his inside leg. An awful lot of dogs are "tan and white" but very, very few dogs are born with actual numerals on their skin.

I also plan to have him photographed all over - and keep those pix in my safe-deposit box.

Not everyone goes to this extreme but again, I have the kind of dog people will steal for the fighting ring and I'd be just as happy to keep him as the big cuddly baby he is now, thank you.

I have had 3 dogs microchipped in the past, 2 never felt a thing and the other yelpped but i gave him a treat afterwards (he was a complete and utter wus).
I now have a westie and when taking him for his first check up i asked about it and they advised due to him being so small the best time to do it was when he was getting castrated and already under. I am just waiting for him to be old enough for him to get this done and doing the two at the same time.
Vets are very good and if you are worried you don't have to be in the room while it is getting done.
Talk to your vets as microchipping is the best thing to do;

Most dogs dont feel it when there chipped, however i got my yorkie cross jack russel microchipped when she was still a puppy and she screamed the room down, the vets were quite shocked as they had been telling me previously that she wouldn't feel a thing. The other thing with microchipping is that there has been several cases of the chip dissapearing!! They are meant to stay at the back of the neck, but alot of people who have took there dog back for there yearly jabs have found when they have been scanned that the chip isn't there no more, the vets try scanning around the body and no success. This happened with my own bi tch and i have not had my 2nd dog chipped because of this.Im sure your dog will be fine if you go ahead with it and good luck.

If you haven't gotten your dog fixed yet that is a good time to get him micro chipped. If your dog is a good sized dog he won't even notice the procedure even if he is awake. Small dogs do better if they are under. But speak to your vet about your concerns and between you find a way to address them. Microchipping is just about the only way you can be sure of getting your friend home again if he should run off.

I had my dogs chipped. It was the best thing I could've done for them. One runs away occasionally, and without the chip we wouldn't have found her. I see what you mean you don't want to hurt your boy, my other dog is a whimp too. But when we got him chipped it didn't hurt him. (from what I can tell) All it is is a tiny needle with a microchip in it. They put the needle in the tough of the neck near the collar, wear it's less likely to cause hurt. The needle isn't in for more than 10 seconds(maybe less) I would TOTALLY recommend getting him chipped. It's like getting a small shot. Easy, simple, and a petsaver!

I had my 15 month old pedagree siberian husky done. She was really good with her injections and we got the chip donr the same day. They put it in their neck and its so tiny its unreal. Yes it does hurt and i have to say she didnt like the vet after that nad we had to muzzel her but if she id close to you she will want pets and loves. Keep telling it that it is a good girl/boy all the time and it will just want to be petted after. You can get the normal ones which are just a microchip with details in or one that has a thermomiter in that is best becaus ethey just scan it and it givers the dogs temp if it ill etc. So that means no shoving things up its butt.

We had both of our Goldies micro-chipped and they didn't notice a thing. We have four Goldies and the oldest one had been tattooed in her ear, it was still sore and bloody when we picked her up so must have been painful. As she grew the tattoo got fainter and fainter and now you can hardly see it, so not a lot of use. Micro chipping is safe, and virtually painless. All I would say is, get the vet to check periodically that the chip has stayed in place as it can move! The microchip in our one pup moved about 4 inches and we keep an eye on it regularly!

I had my GSDs chipped when I got them vaccinated. They never even noticed it. ( make so much fuss over getting the claws clipped though !! - big wussies)
I only know of one case where a microchip went missing - it was on a friend's dog and it disappeared down the shoulder somewhere. The microchip company paid the bills to put it right.

i have had my dog microchipped twice, the first time is when she was a pup and the vet did it whilst she was awake and she didnt feel a thing. then we wanted a pet passport for our dog so we went to get her microchip checked by the vet and she could not find it in her body.
so our dog was due to be spayed and we had it done then.
The point is that the dog does not feel a thing and it is well worth the £15 if your dog ever goes missing
