Make a mono rail using electromagnetic properties.
Induction coils, maxwells domains, hysteresis loops. That sort of thing.

Build a hovercraft. I did that as a science fair project one year, just as an excuse to build something. I tested how far it could go over different surfaces. Maybe you could research that, or how air pressure in the skirt affects distance. Its actually incredibly simple if you go with a circular design, plus you can impress people by saying you built a hovercraft!
