there are 3 different types of coats, longhair, smooth (short), and wirehair, the wirehairs have a texture similar to schnouzers. We went yesterday to pick out a puppy, and they look to us like they are all going to be smooths, but i've never seen a wirehair at 5 weeks old. If i was a wirehair, wouldnt the hair at 5 weeks already be course and long? I should be able to tell an obvious difference right?

OK, If one of the parents are wirehaired the likelyhood increases that some of the pups are wired. Assuming that one of the dachshunds parents is wirehair the puppies will look smooth even if they grow to be wire. The way to find out is to look at the bottom edges of their ears. The wires should have tiny hairs starting to hang off the edge while the smooths won't. good luck...I LOVE my wired!

the coat types are rarely interbred and if the pups parents are both smooth the chance of a wirehair in the litter is zero.

At 5 weeks you should be able to see a difference in the hair on the puppy's face.

Hope you'll consider rescue next time! There are so many sweet dachsies in need of good homes.
