Islam makes numerous referenses to Jesus as the Messiah. They concede the virgin birth, there's some question on the crucifixition and ressurection for them.
Understanding that to be the place where Muslims come from in their understanding of Jesus (and many Muslims' failing to follow Mohammed's instructions to read and know the scriptures that come before the Koran) then it helps a bit in the debate.
Though for scripture quotes, I would suggest that we not go beyond Gospel. It's well known that the apostlesbelieved Chrsit to be the son of God but their belief is not the proof an educated Muslim would seek.
I'm partial to John 14:6: "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Jesus is never recorded in the Bible as saying the exact words, “I am God.” That does not mean, however, that He did not proclaim that He is God. Take for example Jesus’ words in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” At first glance, this might not seem to be a claim to be God. However, look at the Jews’ reaction to His statement, “We are not stoning you for any of these, replied the Jews, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33). The Jews understood Jesus’ statement to be a claim to be God. In the following verses, Jesus never corrects the Jews by saying, “I did not claim to be God.” That indicates Jesus was truly saying He was God by declaring, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). John 8:58 is another example. Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am!" Again, in response, the Jews take up stones in an attempt to stone Jesus (John 8:59). Why would the Jews want to stone Jesus if He hadn’t said something they believed to be blasphemous, namely, a claim to be God?
John 1:1 says that “the Word was God.” John 1:14 says that “the Word became flesh.” This clearly indicates that Jesus is God in the flesh. Acts 20:28 tells us, "...Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood." Who bought the church with His own blood? Jesus Christ. Acts 20:28 declares that God purchased the church with His own blood. Therefore, Jesus is God!
Thomas the disciple declared concerning Jesus, “Lord and my God” (John 20:28). Jesus does not correct him. Titus 2:13 encourages us to wait for the coming of our God and Savior - Jesus Christ (see also 2 Peter 1:1). In Hebrews 1:8, the Father declares of Jesus, "But about the Son He says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom."
In Revelation, an angel instructed the Apostle John to only worship God (Revelation 19:10). Several times in Scripture Jesus receives worship (Matthew 2:11; 14:33; 28:9,17; Luke 24:52; John 9:38). He never rebukes people for worshiping Him. If Jesus were not God, He would have told people to not worship Him, just as the angel in Revelation had. There are many other verses and passages of Scripture that argue for Jesus’ deity.
The most important reason that Jesus has to be God is that if He is not God, His death would not have been sufficient to pay the penalty for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). Only God could pay such an infinite penalty. Only God could take on the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21), die, and be resurrected - proving His victory over sin and death.

What Muslim told you they respected Jesus. Meet a real Muslim and He will tell you that Jesus was a heretic. And secondly In Mathew Mark Luke and John there are places were he insinuated that he was the Son of God AKA the Messiah according to Jewish legend, or the almighty. And as far as him saying he was God, have you ever heard of a sovereign, that can be more than one person but still one authority.

Jesus knew very well who he was, He was the only Begotten Son of God, Now it is true that he did not claim to be God, Do you know why, because he was not God, When Jesus was ask are you the one to come, he told his Apostles to go & tell john that he has seen the blind to see,ETC. Then when ask is he the king of the Jews, again Jesus said that you say I am, He never denied it, Then when Jesus was praying the night before his death he said not my will be done but thy will, therefore Jesus knew he was fulfilling scriptures as a lamb being lead away to be slaughter.

You greater efficient examine the gospels returned a sprint greater heavily. Matthew 26:sixty 3-sixty 4 (Jesus replies to the extreme priest asserting that he's the Christ, the Son of God) John sixteen:30-31 (Jesus' disciples comprehend he has come from God and he confirms this theory) John 8:fifty 8 (Jesus says "earlier Abraham grew to become into born, i'm!") in case you may examine in the time of the gospels and not come away with an understanding that Jesus claimed to be, grew to become into perceived by utilizing others to be, and grew to become into the Son of God, and grew to become into crucified for that declare, then there is something incorrect with your analyzing comprehension skills.

I don't doubt that Muslims express respect for Jesus as a prophet but truly the Scriptures do show the divinity of Christ. I will try to give ones directly spoken by Jesus.
"I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath." (Matthew 12:6-8)NIV
"The high priest said to Him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."(Matthew 26:63-64) NIV
"Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I, too am working." For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him; not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His OWN Father, making Himself EQUAL with God." (John 5:17-18)NIV **my note-equal as to being divine, but not in position for "My Father is greater than I" (John 14:28)NIV
"You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world."(John 8:23)NIV
"You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to Him, "and you have seen Abraham!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "BEFORE Abraham was born, I AM!" (John 8:57-59)NIV
"We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."......"Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I (note-Jesus said "I") said, 'I am God's Son'? Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does.....believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."(John 10:33-38)NIV
"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord' and rightly so, for this is what I am"(John 13:13)NIV
"After Jesus said this, He looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify YOUR Son, that YOUR Son may glorify You. For You granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all You have given Him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." (John 17:1-3)NIV

I agree with you in one sense, Jesus is not God. And the ones who use the statement that Jesus said - I am in union with God - That just meant that they think alike, not that they are one. I have to ask, have you ever watched a young boy and his father? The child will exactly copy his father in whatever he does. Can't it be said that they are in union? Or when people are in a work union, they are said to be one and the same, but they aren't the same being, are they? Same laws apply here. When you say that God and Jesus are the same you are ignoring the scriptures quoted above.

When charged by opposers with ‘making himself a god,’ Jesus’ reply was: “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said: “You are gods”’? If he called ‘gods’ those against whom the word of God came, and yet the Scripture cannot be nullified, do you say to me whom the Father sanctified and dispatched into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, I am God’s Son?” (Joh 10:31-37) Jesus there quoted from Psalm 82, in which human judges, whom God condemned for not executing justice, were called “gods.” (Ps 82:1, 2, 6, 7) Thus, Jesus showed the unreasonableness of charging him with blasphemy for stating that he was, not God, but God’s Son.
Jesus’ being called the “only-begotten Son” (Joh 1:14; 3:16, 18; 1Jo 4:9) does not mean that the other spirit creatures produced were not God’s sons, for they are called sons as well. (Ge 6:2, 4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:4-7) However, by virtue of his being the sole direct creation of his Father, the firstborn Son was unique, different from all others of God’s sons, all of whom were created or begotten by Jehovah through that firstborn Son. So “the Word” was Jehovah’s “only-begotten Son” in a particular sense, even as Isaac was Abraham’s “only-begotten son” in a particular sense (his father already having another son but not by his wife Sarah).—Heb 11:17; Ge 16:15.

i think that he tried to do the opposite really, to not claim divinity, but to show himself as a way to God rather than as God. Also, i suppose that dying on the cross was meant to show him being lowered down to human level, so I guess you're right, he didn't exactly. That's how I see it.
