The flag of The International Committee of Red Cross is based upon the National Flag of Switzerland, the home of the founder, and country were the Head Quarters is located, in Geneva.
On the 24th of June,1859, The Swiss businessman, HENRY DUNANT witnessed the Battle of SOLFERINO. He was so appalled by the carnage, and the fact that the 40,000 wounded were left on the field to die, that offered to nurse th wounded giving them what aid and comfort He could. He later campaigned to have some form of humanitarian organization formed that would give aid to the needy where, when and as required. In 1862 He wrote a book about His experiences, "A Memory of Solifino". The profits from the sales were used to create the precursor to the modern "Red Cross" Organization. It took as It's emblem Switzerland's flag of a white cross on a red background, and reversed the colors so that no other country, nation or empire could ever mistake their workers for soldiers on a battlefield. This has since become the internationally recognized symbol of the Medial and Nursing arms of the Military and their Civilian counterparts.
