Plants are filled with a green pigment called chlorophyll that allows them to harness the energy in sunlight to piece together food molecules like sugars.

The deeper question is, why green? The sun is yellow, the sky is blue, sunlight is white.

Well, it happens that the sun produces a lot more light in the red and blue regions of the spectrum than it produces green light. Even the spectrum seen in a sunset contains little green. And if you look at something green through a red filter, it looks rather black. A green color is good at absorbing those red, blue, etc. wavelengths while reflecting only the green, so this color takes the best possible advantage of the available light from the sun

Chlorophyll is the chemical in plants that makes them appear green. This chemical is how the plant feeds, and saturates the plant's body. Chlorophyll appears green, and so do plants.

However, if you notice in the fall time, in the right climates, trees will shed their leaves. The process is the tree going into a dormant stage for the winter, where feeding will be reduced. At these times, fall foliage appears as the colors of the leaves not hidden by chlorophyll. Red, orange, yellow, and others.

Also, any color we see is simply that frequency of light bounced off the object. Since the light reflecting off of plants on Earth has to come through our atmosphere first, our atmosphere plays a role in how plants (and everything) appears on Earth.

On an alien planet, plants may evolve to use chlorophyll, but would appear a different color due to the other environmental factors.

Why are plants green?
great question, now, like us, they are made up of cells. There are two different types of cells: plant and animal. Animal, obviously goes to snake, bats, ants, humans etc. while plant goes to rhodies, venus fly plant, tulip, rose etc.
Plants, have a chemical called cloriphyl (thats spelled wrong).
Now why arent we green? We dont have any cloriphel we are consumers, not producers. Producers are the plants and cloriphil is used in photosynthis which the plants use to make food. If you want to try an experiment, do this.
get two white flowers, cut a little of the stem on both of them. Put one in plain water, and the other in colored water. Something dark like red, blue, green, purple you pick.
observe and you'll see the flower in the colored water would start turning that color, not the stem but the flower. This is because plants use water, carbon dioxide and sunlight to make their food.

Well, it is very simple, but very complicated. The grass and many plants like it have a special "thing", well, maybe a mineral, I don't know, in their structure. That mineral is called chlorofile and its color is green. So, there it is. Now you know where does the grass's color come from.
P.S. A very good question. And may I ask you... how old are you? Haha... ;) I'm just kidding. You know, it's never late to ask about something that you don't know. Cheers!

Not all grass is green. There are varieties that are red, yellow, brown and blue...yep, blue. All the colors of plants are genetically coded. The green in all plants is caused by chlorophyll.

Actually, it's because the cholorophyll in the plant absorbs all wavelengths of light OTHER than green. It reflects the green light.

Because of a protein in the plant. It gives the color code/information and is already embedded in the seed.
