I try to say it but I try to show it in my actions, too..... Actions sometimes do speak lounder than words. So I always try to back up what I say with proof of action.

I wouldn't say profusely but definately enough to let the person know what they have done is appreciated. I think it is a sign of respect as well. When a friend does a simple thing and one says thank you it creates a certain positive energy. It is always nice to be on the receiving end of a thank you, it feels good to know that even the simplest thing/ action is appreciated by those around you. The majority of the culture in my country doesn't even have a word for please or thank you! It is very hard to do something nice for them when they just take and request things without ever saying thank you. So "thank you" is a wonderful and powerful phrase that works magic and it should be used a lot more than it is.
Thanks for the enlightening question. :-)

I always say please and thank you. I do so as is appropriate for the situation. I am not sure "profusely" is the correct word, however, for most occasions when I use it. Sometimes thanking someone profusely for a common courtesy may be excessive and make the other person feel uncomfortable.

The trick is to show your appreciation while keeping the social or business situation comfortable for both (all?) parties.

Nothing wrong with thanking people, Tink, although if you heap it on too "profusely" they might begin to wonder about the sincerety.

I figure, if I'm really thankful, I'll just say it enough that they can catch on..like two or three times is fine. And my friend who gave me a brand new guitar:..mor'dn that! and Hey, I AM thankful!

That's it! Good question! ("Stingy's " out! ) ----Sionarra

I use to thank people profusely and as I walked away I always wanted to kick my self for "over thanking someone" it's silly I know.

But now I'm under control and only say it once and with a big smile.

I thank people profusely, and I also always say sorry when I collide with someone in a Pub (even when it's not my fault)

Then again, I've never ever had a pub fight, so perhaps it's to my benefit.....

Also, it's probably better to be seen as someone that thanks profusely, as opposed to someone who's selfish for not doing so..

I don't thank "profusely". I'm always polite, but never profuse about it.

I always say thank you when someone has done something for me, but I know that it kind of annoys me when someone is too profuse in their thanking of me, so I tend to say, "Thank you for blah, blah, blah. I really appreciate it." and let that be it.

I thank people often. It helps to get their "buy" for later favors. It is also something I like to hear...and I like practicing the golden rule.
