There's only really one kind: Useless prayer.

One man with a hammer can do more good than a billion people praying.

There are four kinds of prayer:

1. Praise and worship
2. Thanksgiving
3. Petition
4. Intercession

The first three are prayers directed to God. Intercessory prayers are directed to the saints in heaven. Intercession is NOT the same as mediation. Intercession is simply asking someone to pray on your behalf. Catholics ask the saints in heaven to join them in prayer to God.

There are many types of prayer, as there are many many different forms of worship out there. Some get on their knees with hands clasped and eyes shut. Others light candles, and burn pieces of paper with wishes and desires on them. No form is wrong, all forms have the desired affect.
