DEFINITELY not Michigan. The only place in the nation that has a higher unemployment rate is the area affected by Hurricane Katrina, our taxes are high (and will be going up), a gallon of gasoline is more expensive here than it is in Honolulu, and even with the depressed housing market it's still expensive to buy a home here.

California and Hawaii are beautiful, but it's VERY expensive to live in either state and they have more than their fair share of poverty-stricken areas. If you're looking for a state with low taxes (no taxes in some cases), a good economy, and a good standard of living, you should check out Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Texas. If you're an outdoors-type, take a good look at Alaska -- I have a colleague who lives in Anchorage and LOVES it!!! The town has a population of about 300,000 but still has that "small town" feel according to him, crime is low, cost of living is moderate, and the winters in Anchorage are nowhere near as bad as people think.

In every state you can find areas that have high standards of living, and areas of high poverty. There are states such as Arkansas, and Mississippi, that have a higher level poverty than others. In states where the standard of living is high, the cost of living is also very high. If money is not a factor, then go for places such as San Diego, San Fancisco, New York, Chicago, etc. You also have to consider what type of climate that you want to live as every state and region varies. You also have to look at what type of life style you are seeking. Are you wanting a rural, urban or suburban life style. If you are looking for rural and not too cold or hot, then look towards North Carolina. Seattle and Chicago have wonderful suburbs as wells as downtown urban living. Houston and Dallas also have great suburbs. I've lived in a number of places across the US and have travelled the US quite a bit. The Pacific Northwest is my favorite region followed by the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia.

Personally I think the best states to live in are Hawaii and California. Standard of living is good, weather is great, California is very environmentally friendly. California has beaches, mountains, and everything in between.

Generally the standard of living in Southern states is the worst, and I'd never live there. They've got muggy weather, hurricanes (which are going to get worse over time), snakes, high divorce rates, bigotry and discrimination, etc.

imapirateaarr-Sandra Bullock lives in California with her husband Jessie James from West Coast Choppers. I totally agree with your assessment of Austin though, it rocks and the rest of Texas can rot.

Northern California is a nice place. Mountains, ocean, trees and snow. Plus, it's not as crowded.
I live in Southern California and the pollution and huge differences in income between the 2 classes is staggering, there really isn't a middle class here. There are parts of LA that look like a third world country.

Depends upon your preference. Notheast has a lot of snow in winter, Nortwest lots of rain, Midwest has those nasty snow storms in the north and tornadoes in the south. Southeast has tornadoes and hurricanes and those huge lizards. Southwest has the desert with 100+ temperatures in the summer. As for standard of living it all depends upon your individual income level. The higher taxes and prices are definately California. The south has always been labeled with the poor. Just a matter of preference.

The best state to live in depends enitrely on what your willing to pay to live there or not willing to pay. I feel if your looking for something in between low-cost of living and great standard of living I believe Central (Melbourne/Orlando) and Northen Florida would be prime. These places have lower than averages for crime and lower average costs than the rest of the country. The only drawback this area is hurricane season makes it tough to own homes (insurance and rebuilding) and salary is typically lower in this area (less a few occupations such as Accounting or the medical field).

If you want excellent standard of living northern New York or Eastern MA (less the nasty parts of Boston) are prime places to live. Though they have lower than the US averages for crime, the cost of living in these areas are very high above the rest of country. Yet, this area of the country experiences very few extreme weather events (i.e. hurricanes or tornadoes) and there is very little chance of snow runing your home so owing is musch wiser here.

I live in Connecticut which has a high stanard of living, but it costs WAY too much to live here. Some of the southern states are statistically the poorest such as Mississippi and Alabama.
If I could choose where to live it would be California. Mountains, beach, warm weather year-round and lots to do. Plus, Arnold Schwarzeggar as your governor?! Give me California anyday.

I think Colorado is Beautiful...I loved Whyoming when I visited there because there was not any humidity and you could actually breath. It was great...not really sure on the standard of living I would say that none of them are in a high standard...I live in Missouri and it sucks!

Wisconsin or Minnesota. Natue is beautiful, climate stimulating and healthy. Not to crowded, nor thin. Roads good and there are places to "Get away" or if you like cities...of course...We have a few big ones and a large number of smaller ones where crime is almost nonexistant as far as violence. Good health care for the most part, of course you won't find a "clinic" in the woods..however it is accessable Statewide.

A beautiful state is West Virginia. Not only is the topography wonderful with the hills and the green, green trees with magnificant fall colors but the people are the salt of the earth. Has problems, but the wonders out weigh them!
