Yes, I hesitated before I bought one. It doesn t matter what the origins of the symbol are in the eyes of Volvo s producers. The fact is that people automatically see the male gender association from this symbol. Not many people know that it is also the symbol for iron. I think it is shortsighted of Volvo not to address this. There isn t much they can do about this automatic association, no matter how much they insist it doesn t stand for male. Having that symbol on my car was a negative factor in the decision to buy the car. But I bought it anyway because the car s attributes and quality won over the symbolism.

I think its the trademark of Wisdom, as its a wise buy for its solid safety record and build quality. I do like the Arrow attached to the V......but Ferrari's prancing stallion is definitely sexier.
The 60's-early 70's volvo P1800 model was sexy, solid, hand crafted spotscar.
A great used car classic.
Rumor has it Volvo's working on releasing a new model within the next year reflective of the p1800. Watch the dealer showrooms, and save your change, its bound to be good.

Good grief - get over it. It is the symbol for iron. The purpose was to indicate the durability of the car (Swedish iron). By the way, the word Volvo is Latin and it means "I roll." I think you will find that the Swedish people are among the most non sexist in the world.

Volvo started out as a Swedish ball-bearing factory so that would make sense that it is also an iron symbol. What I'm trying to figure out is the taco emblem on the back of the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Sexist? Why is it sexist? The logo obviously contains references to both sexes. Both have been slightly adjusted, of course, so that the logo addresses the viewer's subconscious. It should also be noted that the male symbol suggest excitement.

No, the Volvo emblem is not sexist. It is the ancient alchemist sign for iron. Steel is made from iron, and cars are made from steel, and hence for Volvo chose it as their logo.

The logo is actually an ancient symbol of iron, before the symbol is used for male.

It is also the medieval alchemic symbol for strength and power. I suspect it is this meaning Volvo is suggesting.
