Because of the evidence.

If you look into the history of each religion's version of their god, you'll find that they are all man-made. You can look at each of the stories and see how they reflect the society they came from and offer claims that were common for writers of that society to claim of their "prophets". You can also see how each borrowed from earlier myths and superstitions of the day.

Furthermore, you can look into the myriad superstitions, fables, and urban legends that people believe in. You can see how fervently someone can believe in a story with no basis, and how that story evolves and expands the more it is told. You can also compare this to all the religions we know of and see similarities.

However, you cannot provide one shred of real evidence that any gods actually exist.

That question does'nt make sense. We aethiests believe that there is no god. What you said means that there is a God, we just dont see him/her fit to believe in. Thats not the case. There is no God. Now before you go telling me I'm going to burn in hell for this answer, we also dont believe in hell. We believe in life, love, happiness, honesty, living life to the fullest, and being the best person we can be (all without having fear instilled in us if we otherwise...we do it on our own.) I respect the bible and the people who believe in it. The bible and relgion, despite the fights and wars that erupted over it, also do a lot of good. A lot of people need that hope of an afterlife and the thought of judgement day gets them through dealing with intollerable people.

So please, if this is one of those religious-based questions where I say God doesnt exist so I got reported for abuse and then my answer gets deleted, I understand that I have a respect for religion and those who engage in it. All I ask is the same in return.

because one cannot exist in this society without being inundated with church billboards, watching the news with all the religious claptrap going on. The word God is on our money, the word GOD is everywhere. You cannot possibly be on a computer and not have heard the term. I will give you a star because, that is the WEAKEST,LAMEST attempt to make a point I have yet seen, and I have seen some very lame ones. Why only atheists? Many other religions don't believe in your god. Why not include them? How are we aware that people believe in a god? Because we don't go around not listening, looking.Ignorance is everywhere

Wait.
What? Are you serious?

Sam Harris said it best.
"The entirety of atheism is contained in this response. Atheism is not a philosophy; it is not even a view of the world; it is simply a refusal to deny the obvious. Unfortunately, we live in a world in which the obvious is overlooked as a matter of principle. The obvious must be observed and re-observed and argued for. This is a thankless job. It carries with it an aura of petulance and insensitivity. It is, moreover, a job that the atheist does not want.

It is worth noting that no one ever need identify himself as a non-astrologer or a non-alchemist. Consequently, we do not have words for people who deny the validity of these pseudo-disciplines. Likewise, “atheism” is a term that should not even exist. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make when in the presence of religious dogma. The atheist is merely a person who believes that the 260 million Americans (eighty-seven percent of the population) who claim to “never doubt the existence of God” should be obliged to present evidence for his existence -- and, indeed, for his benevolence, given the relentless destruction of innocent human beings we witness in the world each day."

Man, it is too early to start drinking *drinks tea*

1. There is no evidence for god. Even Christians admit that believers have faith, not proof.
2. All humans know things through their 5 senses. Gods can not be sensed. You must have faith.
3. To be known, something must have tangible evidence.
4. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. So, an invisible man in the sky who can not be seen, hear, touched, tasted, or smelled, created everything and if you don't have faith in him you are going to an awful place called hell needs more than a fuzzy warm feeling to be proved.
5. Truckloads of scientific evidence points to natural explanations for "creation." Thus, dis-proving a literal understanding of Gen 1

Frankly, the fact that one must have faith in god is enough proof that one can not "know:" god.

Because for thousands of years people have been claiming there is one.
Why do you not believe in Santa Claus? The Easter Bunny?
The Flying Spaghetti Monster?
They don't believe there is a god, because they've searched for the one that people keep claiming is there.. but, like the Emperor's New Clothes, they just don't see it, and are like the little kid who shouted "he's naked!"

Generally speaking, non-existence- when proven- makes for great grounds to NOT believe.

However, you have to PROVE non-existence. Atheism's assumption of non-existence is based on more guess work than Christianity ever could shake a Bible at... since the Atheist presumes to know all that exists in the universe and all possible dimensions and universes.

Christianity however speaks of a God that intersected history- to the extent that the year date of our calendars reflects the day that God entered our earth history.

Yet another stupid question. I am always happy to answer sensible questions about my rejection of religion, but some of them border ludicrous. However, here is what atheism is, because you seem to confuse it with something else:

Atheism is disbelieving in a god (believing that it does not exist), not ignoring a proven god. You don't need an object for your disbelief to come through.

I disbelieve in intelligent life on Mars; by your idea, that would mean that there IS intelligent life on Mars and I'm simply ignoring that.

Atheists don't know God does not exist anymore than Christians, Jews, or Muslims know God does exist. They can only believe that way, have an opinion, but none of them can prove it one way or another.
