Dynamic Breathing... It is called Ibuki (spelling) breathing in some dojo. It has to do with muscular tension, isometric exercise (yeah, like Charles Atlas!), and is said to act as a battery, storing ki (chi, chinkichi) energy in the fibers of your muscle and bone so you can take attacks without injury.

They call this San Chin breathing. It exhibits the concept of Ten Sho, (how well the person has learned to coordinate his breathing with his muscles, balance, and coordination and control over his body). Breathing and the muscles involved in your heart, chest, lungs being one of the most basic, autonomic type things your body does automatically-even in your sleep.
The coordination of the slow, powerful, isometric type movements while maintaining your balance and coordinating the movements, the flexing of your muscles with your breathing and then speeding up the kata at the end and executing those last moves with speed as well as power exhibit the mind body connection and how well the individual has mastered control over their body in this kata.
This type of breathing can be used in many katas for developing your power, technique, and also speed as it taxes your muscles all the way through the motions of blocking and punching to the fullest extent. Hyperventilation can occur and people can faint from this so it should be practiced with care and is not done except at the advance and black-belt levels.

Long breath.... whoops... Seriously though if you are going to do sanchin.... do it under supervision. Make sure your teacher actually knows the correct way to execute Sanchin, breathing etc. Look up World recorde for the largest Hemorroids.... it is held by someone who did Sanchin incorrectly.... no kidding.
