Tell your father that water should be provided at ALL times. 24/7 Here it is for him to read for himself. You're good owner for wanting all that is best for your pet http://www.longliveyourdog.com/Careguide/CareNutrition/CareNutritionNutrition/Water.aspx If this doesn't convince him I don't know what will. I keep water for my dogs inside & out on the deck.In the summer I always put ice in the water a few times a day to keep it cool.

Dogs can't sweat - they need to pant and drink water to regulate their internal temperatures, double or triply so during warm weather.

Restricting water access isn't a good way to handle housetraining issues. Puppies do need to go out after drinking water - but they need to drink water when they're thirsty. Anything else leads to mild-to-severe dehydration and can lead to death.

If that doesn't convince him, show him the "feed and water" section of a book on dog care. If that still doesn't work, next time the puppies go in to the vet for a checkup, ask his vet, with Dad present.

Water shouldn't be available CONTANTLY for puppies, because they will gorge on it and throw up.They do need water on a VERY regular basis, though. Water BEFORE food is better than after, because the puppy kibble will expand in the stomach very quickly if the puppy drinks water after eating. This can give him a belly ache and can actually cause an illness in adult dogs called bloat that's deadly without fast medical care.

Puppies should have water after playing, sleeping, and several times throughout the day. Don't fill the bowl up completely, though, because as I mentioned earlier, he will gorge himself. So, pour a small to medium portion of water for him to drink...amount depends on the size and age of the puppy.

If you're worried your puppy isn't getting enough water, look at his gums. If they are white or a light pink, he is dehydrated. If they are a nice bright, rosy pink, he's fine.

Once a puppy becomes older and he knows not to hog down water, you can keep his bowl filled up all the time.

Well he is correct and incorrect. They need lots of water not just after food but it is not if you are crate training you may want to limit the amount of water they are taking in at certain times. While they need water often they don't need it all the time. If you are available to offer the puppy water often you can try to avoid the puppy gulping down large amounts of water just before getting in the crate for a few hours.

They don't need it 24/7 but they do need to have fresh water many times a day not just after they eat. The pup should have access to water every hour to two hours. To not give the pup water is cruel.

I say dad is right and wrong a puppy needs plenty of fresh water. although if your potty training. I suggest that the puppy has no water available from 1 hour before he/she goes to sleep. then put out in morning for potty break then he/she may have more for the day,

Your dad is NOT correct!!!!! The puppy(puppies) could become easily dehydrated and die. Unfortunately, most people have this common misconception that if a puppy doesnt drink the water, they do not want it. LEAVE THE WATER THERE, 24/7 AND MAKE SURE THE BOWL ALWAYS HAS WATER IN IT.

All dogs, any age, need water available to them all the time. Crate training is an area you want to limit the amount of water they have if the puppy is going to be in it for a while. I actually do provide water for my foster puppies in the crate.

I don't leave water down for my pups allthe time.
It is much harder to train them if you don't know whenthey need to go out.
Just after food isnt right they do need it more often. I give at feeding and when I feed depennding on age of pup 2-4 times a day tehy get food and water for 1/2 hour. about evey 4 hours through day and leave for 15 minutes. and I go to bed at 10 so no water after 6 pm and I get up at 5 in teh morning and that's the first feeding and watering.
The law where I live says water provided a evry 12 hours but not good for pups.
Also call your vet and see what they say.
