In the 1880's they called gas engines atmospheric engines. Pistons are moved by expanding air and fuel set alight by a spark fuel burns and expands the air pushing the piston. piston is connected to the crankshaft with a connection rod that takes the crank around crank has a heavy mass on it called a flywheel that keep the crank turning for 720 degrees until the intake of air fuel, compression, Spark power and next exhaust stroke . 4 cycles. Valves let in the air fuel and open to exhaust burnt fuel and heat out. Camshaft opens the valves and turns at half crankshaft speed Pictures of the exterior of the engine will not show you anything.

Sorry I have no pictures. Intake, compression, power, exhaust. The piston is at top dead center, and starts down, intake valve opens, fuel enters the cylinder, at the bottom of the crank stroke the intake valve closes. The piston starts up and compresses the fuel. As the piston reaches the top, the sparkplug fires. The piston is pushed down on the power stroke from the expanding gas, when the piston starts back up, the exhaust valve opens and the piston forces the spent gas out the exhaust, then it all starts over again.
