I think it's funny people are saying beagles bark too much- look at the list- most of those little dogs are yippers. My beagle/dastchund mix from the pound has barked twice- both times it was at big dogs who weren't tied and owner's weren't present and he was tied. Can you blame him?

I say look on petfinder and find something at a local shelter. I can't believe my baby would have soon been euthanized- he's so well behaved and such a loving, good dog :) Go, look, fall-in-love and save a life :)

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Cute, smart and sweet dogs that don't have the typical personality of a toy breed which, without training, can be out of control.
Bichon Frise - this breed requires a lot of regular grooming, so you must be willing to pay for a professional
Beagle - these dogs howl like there's no tomorrow and on walks their nose is on the ground constantly, they pull and pull as they follow a scent. So, training is very necessary for this breed.
Toy Poodle - smart, but delicate breed that, along with the Bichon, requires a lot of grooming.
Cairn Terrier - terriers are very active and energetic dogs. they also require training because they're hyperness can get them into trouble

A breed suggested by me:
Staffordshire Bull Terrier - Called the "nanny dog" in the UK. This breed looks tough, but it has a heart of gold. They don't shed much and require virtually no grooming. The tallest they get is 14-16 inches at the shoulder, so they're a big dog in a little body. They are very loyal and get along with everyone and everything.

Hello, We would like to suggest a Pomeranian. Ours will be 10 yrs old in Nov. Pomeranian's are very lovable and very easy to train. They are good protectors but in most cases are never to the point that they will cause severe harm to others but they will let you the owner know that there is something around or near that is not of the normal. They love attention but do not require complete non-stop attention. This breed of dog is also very good around children and senior adults. The are well-known for going into hospitals, nursing homes and children's homes to cheer up those there. This breed of dog loves to give love and attention to those who want and need love. Like I stated earlier we have had our dog for a number of years and when the time comes and it will I can say that he will be missed just as a family member would be as he at most times can and is considered closer than a family member. Pomeranian's give much love unconditionally and accept it in the same manner.

I recommend you Yorkie & Papillon, it's easy to take care of, loyal, smart and nice. Combing it's coat is just like combing a girls hair because of one layer, not like the poodle and bichon frise, they have thick coat.

Beagle is cute but it's too playful! You can't keep it in a small house and it'll try to play with you all the time.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, If you can't take good care of them, there'll be a smell, but it's cute.

I never had a cairn terrier before, can't help you about that.

Myself is having a toy poodle now, it's loyal, clean, less hair fall (unlike the shih tzu), easy to train and a lot of grooming style.

Having a dog is fun, enjoy!

As someone who owned Pomeranians all her life, I highly reccomend them. They're well natured, can tollerate children who are gentle with them, and are very, very affectionate. They're also fairly "hardy" for a small dog, and can live up to eighteen years (I had one that was almost) and have very few genetic problems (I do reccomend taking very good care of their teeth, because after they hit 15, if their teeth arent tended to on a regular basis, they WILL fall out.).

(And beagles arent really "small" dogs, and are fairly active on the whole. If you want a lap dog, I'd stick with something a lot smaller.)

A Bichon Frise. We have one and they are the most loving dog there is. You will need to learn how to clip the dog or else take the dog in frequently to the groomer. He is the most fun dog. They watch cars because they think that each vehicle is coming to visit him, entertains himself with balloons, loves everyone including other dogs that visit, very clean, and the only thing about housebreaking is that you need to pay attention or else you will have messes. We were given him because the lady said that her husband said that one of them had to go. Him or the dog. They couldn't housebreak him and the animal shelter gave him to us because he was a difficult dog. We just paid attention to him and there has been only one mess. We feel the dog knew that the husband didn't like him and was vindictive.

We have four Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and they are such nice natured dogs. They also plonk thereselves down happily and off they go to sleep and will quite happily sleep the day away. They love being taken for a walk, but to them as long as you love them, feed them and let them sleep, they will let you miss that.

They say that Cavies are not very bright. Our one dog has learned to press the peddle on the wastbin and remove whatever she fancies. The other dog will do a high five, so they are brighter than they appear. But they do snore!!!

Your choice should be baised on many conditions such as how much room will the dog have to play/exercise,how much time you have to devote to him/her,will there be children around, are there other animals in the household??? Look for a breed that fulfills these temperment qualities. Some dogs are extermely "hyper" others are more "laid back" and some require constand attention.Do your best to make the choice that will make your new pet HAPPY. Good luck.

Do you have kids? If yes i do not recommend a pomeranian or toy poodle. Papillons are good, yorkies are good, bichons are usually good, with kids. Shelties are not very small (more medium sized) but they are great dogs. Cairn terriers..i have one, she's VERY hyper and barks a lot. Beagles arent too small either, but they are good also. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels...EXCELLENT dogs! Honestly, it depends on your lifestyle.

Are you planning on keeping the dog inside? If you are ,get a toy poodle because they do not shed at all and they are very easy to housebreak. Beagles are good pets and they do well outside.Just got my nephew one. One last suggestion is a rat terrier. They are very smart and loving little pets. Yorkies are annoying little critters and high maintance.
