Earlier today I noticed that my dog had a hard lump that was located just under her nipple that went down to her vulva. It wasnt their last night and I was wondering if anyone knew what it could be.

She had puppies about four days ago and my neighbor said that the puppies might not be nursing correctly and that it could just be excess milk.

Is it something that will clear up on its own or is it like something thats left over from when she had the puppies. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

She is a small dog a Rat Terrier and had 5 puppies. I've noticed that the pups rarely nurse on that one nipple.

Quick question when I take her to the vet later today should I bring the puppies with her so they are not seperated from each other for a long period of time?

Considering its 4am and I only noticed the lump a few hours ago so I doubt that anyone would be at the vets office.

My neighbor used to be a vet's assistant and I talked to her over the phone and I described it to her and that was her opinion.

I am taking her to the vet when it opens around 9 or 10 and was only wondering if this was common. Shessh.

Call the vet and get her checked ASAP!!!

The worst it could be is mastitis which is a infection in the milk producing gland. It gets really swollen and hard to the touch./squeeze. In early to mid stages if you strip the tit the milk is almost clear with white little chunks. If this is the case your vet will give her a shot of antibiotics to clear it up. And in acute stages you won't be able to get any milk. But it also can be fatal if the puppies drink from it. At least that is what happens with our sheep when they get it. We usually have to pull the lamb(s) off of them and bottle feed them till the infection has passed. But only your vet will know the answer.

But most likely it is just full of milk and the puppies are eating from that one tit more then the others so the gland has been over stimulated. Which causes more milk production.

But please call the vet to get it check out!

This way you can kill 2 birds with one stone. You can get momma checked and get dewclaws removed and tails docked if needed!!!

Good Luck!!!

i don't think of so. I first got here across a lump 5 days after my toddler replaced into born, and that i referred to as a breastfeeding hotline. The nurse practicioner advised me no longer to be worrying about it--she stated that nursing breasts are lumpy. yet when that's huge and also you imagine there is milk stuck there, I continually use heating pads. it really is what she suggested to me. in certain, she suggested those that are like bean bags made up of rice or inspite of that you microwave. i'm getting clogged ducts each and every of the time because I easily might want to pump, and that's been very useful to have some thing that works, even although I often times might want to do it various situations.

On a lactating *****, you need to be very careful when you see something like this. It could be the early stages of mastitis. When the mastitis gets worse, it will get red, painful, hot to the touch and she could end up with bloody milk coming out of that area. If you do not do anything about Mastitis, it could turn into gangrene! Put warm compresses over the area and try to express milk yourself. I would take her to the vet.

take her to teh vets as planned and yes the pups should go not only to keep them with her but the vet might want to check them over as well.
it could be a blocked milk duct or could be something else and a vet is what is needed.
Good Luck

It is just milk. Put the biggest puppy on that udder and let him nurse. If he falls asleep, then get a different puppy. Don't let them move to another udder. They will eventually drain that one.
You don't need to take her to a vet for that. She will be fine. Just express the milk.

Please take her to your vet and have it check out today. (6-13) Is it a small litter of puppies? It could be excess milk.
