i have walked in the shoes of a depressed person. i have tried suicide and i didnt tell anybody or waste my time online before i did it. i am happy i was smart enough to call poison control when i started feeling the pills (60 sleeping pills all at once) kick in and make me feel like i was slipping away. thats the point when i realised i didnt really want to die. i was in a mental hospital for 3 weeks. so yeah i been there. thanks though. ,,!,,

I can't comment on the question you saw because I didn't see it. Some people want attention that they're apparently not getting from somewhere. Some people are just being juvenile and there are probably some who are serious and are reaching out. Who knows.

From someone who has been to the pits of depression, I pray you never find out why. When you are severely depressed everything appears black and white with no middle ground. It's love, hate or live and die. When you reach the poinit of suicide you feel like you have nothing else to live for. If you find one thing that matters like I did then you get help and start a climb back up. I was fortunate. I would have been one that would have done it and not left a note. I ended up in a hospital emergency room and spent 15 days voluntarily in a psychiatric unit. Something inside me said I can't do this but I needed help. Some people do threaten for attention but they still need help. It is an illness just like alcholism or drug addiction. Just think about what it would be like to have everyone criticizing you for everything you did, you are fighting to hold on to a job and you feel physically ill all the time. I found out just last year I had sleep apnea and a physicians failure to find out what was wrong many years ago pushed me into a downward spiral. The hospitalization made me realize I was at rock bottom and there was no place else to go but up and I've never looked back. Finding the apnea was a big bonus because my general health is gradually improving but I went on despite how bad I often felt. Before you judge anyone, talk a walk in their shoes. In addition, threatening suicide to get attention usually is a learned behavior. Look at insidious mental disorders such as Munchausen's by Proxy. In that instance a parent usually mother seeks attention from hospital staff by making her own child ill.

I agree with a lot of the other answers - for some it is an honest cry for help while some others it is some sick joke. I too have been suicidal at several points in my life and would tend to take threats of it seriously until proven otherwise. A lot of times people don't truly want to die, they just don't want to feel like they do any longer, so they say they want to die. Dying seems like the only alternative but if they can get help they can find other ways of dealing.

I would think that it is a cry for help. Sometimes suicide is about trying to communicate something and can be done demonstratively. Sometimes people are looking to be able get some help or support and do so that way so people take them seriously and see that they are in distress.
I would worry about those people who are serious about killing themselves and hope they get help. I think however this question brings up a good point as threatening a suicide not being a good way of asking for attention, help or support and that there are more effective ways and this is a dangerous pattern to establish when distressed.

It really depends. I'm sure that some of them are serious and desperate for someone to listen and help them. The only problem with that is other people get on and make comments like that to get attention or to poke fun in some sarcastic way at those who are truly depressed and suicidal. So, you never know what is true and what isn't. Having been suicidal myself at one point, I would take most of their comments seriously at first unless or until I knew that they were lying to get attention.

Generally it's people who have no clue how awful depression is. Bullies come in all ages ... could tell you some hairy tales about this type who have frequented the depression support rooms
There are those who will post just to have someone know how much pain they are in. Depressed people are often quite isolated and lonely. Just never know.

that is really sad that person seems to be crying out for help.
I am not sure if that is what is going on or not but if they're serious how can on here help them not to do that?
Good post.
Scary information too but I'd rather have folks live than die...cause suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem....have lost friends that way it's heart breaking..

some people just look for attention, they may be troubled, and lonly and look for sometyp of way to find if theyl recieve anyway of gaining some comment or way of being the number one person to recieve attention.
you never know what may go through there minds but dont encourage them you could be a reason if they take things to heart that they will take the next step.

They need people to talk to. It is easier to talk to a complete stranger whom will never know you. These people often have difficulty asking for help, or do not want to let others see how much distress they are in lest they hurt them.
Your question is insensitive. You do not know whether or not somebody or serious, so it is best to treat all as serious.

Sometimes there is something inside you that doesn't want it and if you can't tell it to your parents, familie or friends, what then?
On the internet nobody really knows you, then it is easier to tell people things, to ask them things.
And sometimes you only have to hear (or read) somebody say (write) that you shouldn't do it, that your mind is back in reality
